Yuri waited for the alarms to start sounding. He waited for the buzzing, or the ringing, or the honking, or whatever sounds the alarms made in this prison. But it was silent. He’d never been this far down the hall way. Not in his own body at least.
For weeks now he’d watched the path through Arne’s eyes. The boy didn’t even know Yuri was in his mind. He was too busy, too worried about avoiding the anger of the other guards. He snuck around, took the long routes as to not run into some of the other, more aggressive young men. Apparently Arne was often bullied, and even some times physically abused. If they did this to one of their own, Yuri didn’t want to know what they’d do to the prisoners. And thanks to the things he’d seen and heard, he did know.
The Restorationists were growing restless. Jovana hadn’t returned from her mission to capture Valentina Lytton, and Elijah’s mystery Russian bodyguard. There were rumors she failed. Others that she abandoned them, and is Elijah’s newest lover. There was a third rumor that she’d been killed by the new female Kirkker had seen Eli with. Yuri wanted to think that Viktoriya had killed Jovana, but he couldn’t know for sure.
Mischa’s nose had been broken last week by a careless and angry guard. Kirkker and Searzy were dead. Two other guards too. Their ire even found Yuri. He was lucky to escape with only what he thought was a fracture to one of the bones in his left arm. The Restorationists didn’t need him. They could have easily killed him.
He’d broken bones before, but this was the first time he’d gone without medical treatment. The guards gave Arne a hard time for bringing them food. They surely weren’t going to let him see a medic. Instead, Yuri asked Arne to bring him some tape and two rulers and attempted to make himself a splint. His arm still hurt, and he was no field medic, but he’d find a hospital later. When he got out.
It was that dream of freedom that made it possible for Yuri to ignore the pain in his arm. That dream was nearly a reality. With Elijah sequestered and Viktoriya pregnant, Yuri had given up on them. If he wanted to get out – and he did, he’d need to do it on his own. And he’d have to do it now.
The hall was silent. At this time of day, the Restorationists were having their daily morning meeting. It wasn’t much, just a bunch of the guards yelling at one another, and the eventual fight breaking out. Without a strong leader like Jovana, the fights came much sooner than before. Yuri pushed through a door that should have been guarded - but wasn’t, and down another hall way. This part of the compound used to be accessible to him and Mischa. Until Horowitz arrived, they had been allowed to visit the medic, commissary, library and gym whenever they wished. Yuri usually didn’t go anywhere, but they did have that freedom. Yuri hadn’t noticed until he started walking around in Arne’s mind that the commissary was not connected to the kitchen. It was merely a room in which Yuri and Mischa were served food. Well, until they were confined to their rooms. He slipped into the empty commissary.
Yuri could hear his heart beating rapidly. Maybe it was nerves. Maybe it was the pain in his arm. He held his arm against his chest. Maybe he could find another shirt, or tape, or something to help bind his arm against the more study, stationary bones of his rib cage. He passed through the empty dining room, the plastic chairs were stacked against the wall, beside the folded table. It didn’t seem anyone was coming to meals at all anymore. They probably didn’t even unfold the table anymore.
There was a door in the back of the room. Yuri had never seen it before. It had always been there of course, but in his previous disconnected haze, he never would have seen it. With his good hand, he turned the knob and pushed it open. He was surprised that it was unlocked. It was dark inside, but Yuri didn’t dare turn any lights on. He wouldn’t do anything that might draw attention. After a moment, his eyes adjusted to the lack of light. He was in a long, tight service corridor. A long way down, there was a faint red light. Yuri started toward that light.
