Where is my camera bag? Noelle wondered as she looked in every nook and cranny of her father's huge house only to find that it was on the coffee table of their living room. She had promised her friend Nick that she was going to take photos of him working out at the gym. He wanted to use it for his profile on a dating app.

I really need to get more coordinated. Noelle thought to herself after finding the camera bag which she had probably left there after coming back from her midnight photography session. She loved to take photos of the stars from their terrace. Their house was on the outskirts of Los Angeles on top of a hill, so the view of the stars from there were great.

She was dressed in a white tank top and black leggings. She might as well work out if she was going to the gym with Nick. Noelle sat down on the couch and put on her socks and shoes.

Her dad walked in to the house in a hurry

Her dad walked in to the house in a hurry. He was wearing his suit. He had most likely been at the office since the morning. He only ever returned to shower or pick up some files. So Noelle was pretty much lonely in the house.

"Hey Elle. Where are you going, dear?" Her dad asked, looking through the files that had been on the coffee table. "The gym." Noelle replied. She would have liked to tell her dad about what she was doing with more detail but she felt like she would just be disturbing him.

Her mom and dad had had her in high school. Her racist grandma had disapproved of her mom because she was Asian and was furious when she learnt that her mom was pregnant. Her mom and dad ran away together, madly in love at the time. Years went by and her dad became rich after he opened up a business with Edward Hart. Along the way her mom and dad became distanced. They had a tumultuous relationship as far back as Noelle could remember.

It was the same as living with divorced parents except they were on and off over and over again. Noelle had to go back and forth from both her parent's houses, so she had a hard time bonding with people and forming emotional connections. Nick was one of the very few who stuck with her though tough times. He was two years younger than her and had a crush on her. But that didn't really affect their friendship.

Noelle knew that Nick would have a girlfriend pretty soon. So even though she didn't have a crush on him, she was afraid that he would end up distancing himself from her. She didn't want to lose her only best friend. Which was why she had been reluctant to take photos for his profile. But Nick managed to convince her in the end.

Her dad picked up the files on the coffee table and left without even turning to say goodbye. Noelle wished it would hurt her. She was so used to that from her father that it didn't even affect her anymore. It wasn't that her parents didn't love her. They were just so busy all the time with their lives that they didn't have time to spend with her. Her mom Ru Shi Bennett was a designer and her dad was a hotelier.

Noelle would rather have her parents fully broken up or fully together rather than being on and off all the time. She convinced herself that she was going to finish college and move away somewhere faraway from both of them so that she wouldn't have to deal with their arguments and nonsense and overall toxic relationship.
