Kate
There's only so much pain a person can handle. No matter how strong a person looks on the outside, inside, they could be falling apart.
That's how Kate felt right now. Someone would ask her a question, she would just nod. She couldn't speak.
She didn't think it was possible, but her tears had run dry. When she had received the phone call, she held one small fragment of hope, but all of that had faded to ash when she saw the flames.
Gone. He's gone.
There had been a wave of people then. Martha, Alexis, her dad, Espo, Ryan, Lanie, and so many others. They were all shocked.
After the fire had been put out, they had rushed to the car. Phone calls were made. The remains were examined. There had been a body. The flesh had been burned away, leaving charred bone and a flood of tears. A few days later, there was a funeral. The Will was read. And that was it. Words were unable to describe what she felt. Even Gates had cried at the funeral. So many tears.
She couldn't bring herself to even look at the flash drive that sat on the coffee table.
She wasn't thinking logically. She couldn't. None if them could.
And yet... There was something that didn't fit. The fire...
She sat up abruptly. She grabbed her phone, and with shaky fingers dialed Esposito.
"Beckett, is someth-"
"He's alive"
