The two giggled as they painted each others' nails.
"It's been so long since we've done this!" Marie exclaimed.
"You can tell by the way I mess up every second." The other girl said.
Marie hit her shoulder. "Carlie Anne Richardson, you're doing a perfectly good job!"
Carlie giggled. "Yeah, right." She looked up to see Marie's mother in the doorway. "Hello," she greeted her.
Marie's mother smiled. "Hello, Dear."
"Hey, Mom," Marie said without looking up.
Her mother waved a phone around. "There's a missed call for you."
"Who?"
"Shane."
They looked up. Shane?
"T-That's impossible," Carlie whispered.
"Why's that?" Her mother asked curiously.
"S-Shane's been missing for about a year. Would he really leave for a while and suddenly come back?" Marie croaked.
Marie's mother raised an eyebrow. "Maybe he left for personal reasons. Maybe a relative was sick."
Carlie stared blankly at the wall. "H-He said it wasn't safe."
Marie's mother walked out of the room, and Carlie snapped back into reality. "M-Marie, I'm worried for Shane. We have to figure out what happened to him."
Marie silently painted Carlie's big toe. "We can't.... Remember? He told us not to follow him. He said it was too dangerous."
"So?!" Carlie groaned. "We have to help him. He could be dying or in deep trouble!"
"Yeah, and if we intervene, we will be, too!"
Carlie looked into Marie's eyes. "Look, let's at least go to his house ONE time. We need to investigate."
"Breaking into property is wrong, and we could get arrested."
Carlie glared then frowned. "Please?!?!"
"Ughh, fine!" Marie yelled.
