"Why don't you love me anymore?"
Connors head whipped up looking at his sister on the dentists' chair, "W-what?"
They were at the dentist office. For days Zoe had been complaining about the pain in her teeth. His mom has made an appointment for her, but it had directly fallen on her birthday which had really upset her but mom had promised to take her somewhere after. Which is incredibly stupid in the state she was probably gonna be in.
She let out a deep sigh, "you don't love me anymore. You don't love me like you used to."
Connor frowned, "What do you mean?"
"You hate me right? You hate me a lot."
"Zoe what are you talking about?" Connor know it was stupid to try to talk to her seriously, especially in the state that she was in.
"You used to give me candy on my birthday. Why don't you give me candy on my birthday anymore Connor?" Zoe said, ignoring Connors question.
"I-" Connor started, he didn't know what to say. Zoe never really talked about their relationship. Normally Connor would just tell her to piss off or Zoe would think that he was high and laugh it off and slam the door in his face.
He really wished his mom would come back soon. She had left a few minutes ago to buy something at Dunkin Donuts since they hadn't eaten anything. The nearest one was around 25 minutes away.
Zoe giggled, "you used to be really funny. I remember all those jokes you'd tell us? 'Why did the chicken cross the road?' do you remember the answer?"
Connor swallowed hard, yeah he remembered, he honestly thought Zoe didn't care.
"Because he didn't wanna be chicken!" Zoe was laughing, "I would always say they were stupid. But at night I'd think about them and laugh. I think two days ago I was sad, and I thought about it. I was laughing really hard I don't know why. But you told me to shut up. That was mean."
Connor looked down. He remembered, he didn't know what to say. What she was saying pained him and he felt like shit.
Connor tested the waters, "You...you hurt my feelings too you know."
Zoe looked at him, tilting her head in confusion, "How?"
She didn't sound offended or mad. Just genuinely confused.
Connor cleared his throat, feeling awkward, "You...you uh, you always agree with dad. Whenever he says something bad about me you always agree...that hurts my feelings too."
Connor felt like he was talking to a little kid.
Zoe's eyebrows furrowed, as she leaned back against her chair, "I'm sorry that hurt your feelings Connor. I just, dads the only person who's nice to me now. Moms nice too but, well I want my brother and I thought maybe dad could be my brother. But that's stupid. I thought maybe if I agreed with dad, maybe he'd give me candy for my birthday."
"Aren't you embarrassed by me? Besides, I'm only the kid who gets high and a huge disappointment," Connor gave out a short sarcastic laugh.
"I'm not disappointed in you Connor," she yawned, her eyes slightly droopy, "I won't ever be disappointed in my big brother."
Connors heart skipped a beat, his stomach knotted in an unknown feeling.
"Hey Connor?"
Connor didn't know if he could say anything, "Yeah?"
"Why did the chicken cross the road?"
Connor smiled, "Why?"
"Because..." Zoe yawner again, almost falling asleep, "because..."
Zoe didn't finish because she was fast asleep. Connor let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. He was shocked, he didn't know what to say; what to think.
Zoe didn't think he was a disappointment? Zoe missed him?
He didn't know what to say. He felt terrible. Zoe wanted a brother and thought he was funny. And there he went telling her to fuck off.
"She'd always laugh at those you know," a voice spoke.
Connor turned, his mom.
"Y-you're back early."
"I forgot my bag as I was pulling out and had to go back."
"You mean you...?"
She nodded as she sighed and sat next to him. She took his hand and squeezed hard, "she loves you Connor. I don't know if you remember, but we used to go to the orchard and on the way, you'd always tell those jokes. She'd cry with laughter, it's like she it was the funniest joke in the world. I remember when her friends came over, she'd always tell them those jokes. She get really offended when they wouldn't laugh."
Connor felt a huge lump in his throat, "I...I suck dont I? I'm such a fucked up brother."
She shook her head, eyes filling with tears, she pulled him into a tight hug, "You're the most amazing thing Connor. We're all so lucky to have you. Zoe, me, your father. We'd break without you."
Connor sniffed, not wanting to cry in front of his mom. He hadn't cried in front of her for so long. He didn't think Zoe loved him anymore.
He was going to make up for all the lost time.
~~~
Zoe groaned as she opened her eyes. Her mouth was in agony and her head hurt. She stood up to go get some Motrin or Tylenol.
She noticed the Motrin by her bed, on her nightstand.
She was confused. But even more confused when she saw her favorite candy next to it and a small note next to it.
