You ran through the streets, crying your eyes out. After what your parents had said, there was no way you could ever go back home. It was raining hard, the cold city streets slick and wet, and with just a split second's misplaced footing, you crashed onto the rough pavement in front of the entrance to the sewers. You cried harder, unable to motivate yourself to get up. You gazed into the inky darkness of the sewer, the only soundtrack to your lament the trickling of water and the distant thrum of traffic.

The longer you stared into the darkness, zoning out, the more you could see amber yellow eyes staring back, glowing like lanterns in the darkness, like the light at the end of a tunnel. You didn't dare break the silence. The gaze you held was like a lifeline. You saw more understanding in those eyes than you had in your entire life.

He was the first to speak, his voice a gruff, yet so, so smooth baritone.

"Why are you crying?" The handsome stranger asked, and your heard skipped a beat when you heard his voice.

"My parents. They kicked me out. But that doesn't matter. Nothing does, now." You replied, chuckling sadly.

And in an instant, he slithered out of the sewer, and it was in that moment, as the street lights illuminated his dark brown fur, you realized that the man who had captivated your heart in mere seconds was...

A rat.

It hit you like a truck hitting an unsuspecting raccoon on a highway. But this did not make your attraction any less intense. He stood up, about 6 and a half feet tall and was fairly muscular.

"My name is Albert." He said, his eyes holding a certain sadness in them. "But you can call me Al."

"I'm (Y/n). Pleased to meet you." You said, taking his weird rat-paw-hand and blushing. His whiskers twitched at your touch.

"May I offer you a tour through my home?" He asked, and as the street lights and stars illuminated those damn yellow eyes, your answer was obvious. "Of course... Al." Together you slipped through the sewers and he led you down to a strangely cozy, beautiful subterranean paradise. On the couch were many, many regular sized rats. He got you a blanket and a warm cup of tea.

"Make yourself at home." He said, his tail waving through the air. You turned on the TV. What was playing was your favorite movie- Ratatouille. He sat next to you, and the rats moved to avoid being sat on. You looked closely at his face. Stitches ran across his forehead. You moved your hand to run a finger across them, but he turned from you. "I'd- I'd rather not be reminded of the circumstances of my creation." He explained after a moment of silence.

"Of course. I understand." You replied. This moment was strangely intimate, but you felt like there was an unbreakable barrier between the two of you.

After a moment of silence, Al asked a question. "Why did your parents kick you out?"

"It's... embarrassing." You blushed.

"You can tell me anything." He whispered, and your heart skipped a beat.

"It's because of my, er. Rat obsession." You admitted.

His whiskers stood on end, and he almost appeared to be blushing. "Ah."

You were afraid, afraid that you had been too offputting. Was that the wrong thing to say? It was the truth. All of your thoughts were cut off as you felt his lips press against yours, his long incisors poking gently at your bottom lip. Your first kiss, and it was everything you had ever dreamed of.

"You can stay with me and my children." He gestured to the rats asleep on the couch. "We can be together, (Y/N)." You were crying, but out of happiness. Al was everything you had ever wanted and more. "Together." You repeated, starstruck. Al kissed you again, the second of many kisses to come. You would grow old with him, love him, and be utterly devoted to him forever more.
