Kellina POV

I'm awakened by my brother who tears into my room and flips my lights on. "Get up Kell. We have to go!" I shake my head, dreams still clearing themselves from behind my eyes. "Go where?" I sit up and pull on my favorite camo zip up, and pull on a pair of jeans over my spandex. "Go anywhere, the pack house in under attack. Mom and dad left to help, you and I are getting out of here since you were attacked once already." "Why aren't you helping?" He sighs in frustration and throws my cowboy boots to me, "because I'm protecting my baby sister." I shake my head at him, no matter how old we are he always calls me his baby sister, "I'm not a baby anymore" he smiles briefly at me. "Come on, lets go." I slip my boots on and follow my brother outside and into the car. "Where are we going to go? Why can't we just stay here in the safe house?" "The safe house isn't the place to be. We need to get away for a few days, Im not letting you get hurt again." I shake my head at my brother as he turns the car on and speeds out into the streets. Terri takes a series of turns and takes us off pack lands, and away from town. He flips the radio onto a country station and starts singing along as I stare out the window.

We've been driving for hours and Terri just sings along to whatever is on the radio, we haven't talked since we left. "Whats really happening Terri? I know I'm not being told everything, I might be younger than you but I'm not a child." He sighs and turns his music down as we pass cattle fields and the sun starts to rise. "The rogues after us, they are after Mom. The leader, he thinks Dad stole his mate." My jaw drops, that situation is just ridiculous. "Thats absurd, if Mom were actually his mate and she mated with another without rejecting him then they would both be dead and neither of us would be here." He nods, "I'm aware of that Kell, it's a ridiculous notion. And it most definitely is not true, so don't believe it for one second. Okay?" Nodding, I let silence fall between us. This deranged rogue is after my mother, why wasn't I trained better if I was supposed to protect her? I could have done much better if I'd had any kind of training, even just self defense.

Staring back out the window, the sun continues to rise and we continue to get further and further away from our parents and our pack. Theres a sign ahead of us that says there is a motel coming up soon and Terri takes the exit. "What are we going to do? We can't just run and hide, right? We should be helping." Terri slams on the breaks and looks at me, "what kind of help would you be? You haven't been trained in anything, I'm doing the job that Dad and I discussed after the last attack. Get you out. You're more important to this family than you think you are Kellina. Uncle Connery wants to hand the pack down to me, and you will be my Beta." I shake my head at my brother, "Thats impossible, females can't be Beta. It's not done, it never has been! Besides Alpha was talking about combining the packs, I'd have even lower rank in a combined pack than I do now! I can't lead anyone, I have no rank, no fighting skills, no knowledge of how to run a pack. I wouldn't be able to help you, Terri. You have to know that." He shakes his head and puts the car back in drive and we drive to the motel.

"Terri, you can't possibly think thats a good idea. And what if this Alpha is my mate? What happens then?" "You don't even know for sure that he is, so what if he isn't? If he is your mate then I will be over the moon for my baby sister, and I will let you move packs if thats what you want and find another Beta. However, until you know for sure then you will be my future Beta. As for the lack of training, that is Uncle's fault. I was going to get you training with me. If you'll accept the position that is." "I'm hugging you as soon as we get out of this car, after I kick your ass for keeping so many secrets from me that is."

He laughs and shrugs off my empty threat, as soon as he pulls into a parking space his phone rings. He starts to open the door as he answers and I clear my throat and look pointedly at him. He closes the door and answers his phone on speaker, "Hi, Dad. You're on speaker." "Son I don't think this is something that she needs to hear, can we talk in private please?" I shake my head, "I know everything, Dad. No more secrets." "She needs to know everything, I've offered her the Beta position. She gets to know just as much as I do." The phone is silent and I start to think dad hung up, when he speaks again. "Thats unusual, however it is your choice. Alright, kids, here's whats happening. The rogues were found on the border of our alliance pack, and I have good authority that Cameron went to investigate. However when his pack members arrived all they found was torn up rogues, Cameron is missing, Alpha Connery is dead, and your mother has been kidnapped. I tried to reach her through the link and I think they have her drugged. And you son, have been announced as our next Alpha."
