In June of 1944, the Allied Powers carry out a successful invasion of France, therefore liberating the country from Nazi control. This invasion gives hope to the Jews of Europe because they hope that this is a signal to an early end of the war. This correlates to The Diary of Anne Frank because in the second act of the play, the people in the Annex find out who stole the food, which was Mr. Van Daan. Mr. Dussel starts to choke him, which then leads Mr. Frank and Peter to attempt to grip him off. Finally, Mrs. Frank snaps and kicks the Van Daan family out of the Annex. In the play, Mrs. Frank goes to Mr. Van Daan and says, "We're all of us hungry! I see the children getting thinner and thinner. Your own son, Peter... I've heard him moan in his sleep, he's so hungry. And you come in the night and steal food that should go to them ... to the children!"
