I pant as I push the door open, then focus on my breathing. 'Slow, and steady..in..and out.' My eyes close as the humid city wind passes me, but my focus is on my breathing until the heavy feeling is gone. Until the white noise static leaves my heart.
I sigh out and shut the door behind me, then walk to the edge of the rooftop. The apartments in New York are cozy..for people without claustrophobia.
I sit on the barrier and stare at the lights, letting the nippy autumn air keep me cool.
'What are the chances of getting a bigger apartment?'
'About the same as my getting a boyfriend.' I remark bitterly, glancing about. I blink, then frown before I focus on where I saw the shadow blur, and then notice it further on.
"What in the..."
I lean forward, gripping the inner edge to keep from falling. I track where the blur goes, ideas blossoming in my mind.
"Off the rooftops..?" I blink when I lose it, and try to search it out amongst the bright lights. No such luck.
I grunt as I swing my feet back onto the roof, standing up. I stand there, my eyes searching for any sign of the mysterious thing. I swallow the ball of disappointment before I turn away and head back into the building.Once I get to my apartment I turn off the AC and open windows, then dim the lights and light some candles. I sit near the window in my bedroom, and still feel the tiniest amount of panic.
"This is why I work overtime." I mutter then stand up and look around. I chew on my lip as I analyze my stuff. I glance at the clock. 21:00
"It's only 9:00, I got time." I get busy, gutting all of the furniture and stuff from my room and forcing it into the hallway, living room and dining room. I stand in the room and deep clean the wood floor, send my rugs through the machines and then start going through my clothes, bagging what I haven't liked or worn for years. After I cleaned my closet, I hang the clothes and basket the rest on the shelf above the hangers. Leaving the floor open. I stare at it before I set about organizing my boots and sneakers there.
I take apart my bed set and drop the mattress forms on the floor in the corner, set the rugs down to block the cold floors, then push my entertainment consoles back into my room against the wall they always occupied.
I sit on my mattress and take in the now empty but spacious feeling room. I smile, then get up to push all the rest of my junk into the office room.
I take a deep breath and lean against the doorframe, staring at the piles upon piles of stuff.
"Eh. Some other day." I shrug and shut the door, turning back to my room. I glance at the clock. 00:45. I curse and rush to get ready for bed.
