I sit at the wall, watching the boys train. I focus on their swift movements, flips and when they stop then continue. I analyze their movements with then without their weapons, mentally taking notes.
"Dan." The boys stop when splinters calls on me. I get up and mutely stand before him. "Let's see what you know." He gestures for the rest to clear off the mats, then motions to Leo and come up. I watch him and then mimic as he walks to the center of the mat and makes a bow with his hands up. Splinter calls out a word I'm unfamiliar with, and Leo gets into a stance. I hesitantly get into one like his, then hear snickering. My eyes shift to Mikey then go to Leo, who's fist is already a centimeter to my nose. I jump back and blink. Leo scowls and glance to splinter, who then shouts a different unfamiliar word. He relaxes and I lower my fists.
"Dan," I look to splinter."how much do you know about fighting?" Mikey snorts again, and I glare this time.
"Clearly not enough." Mikey loses it and laughs, rolling. I clench my jaw then focus on master splinter. He stood up and walks to me.
"Boys, you are excused."
Heavy shuffling then dissipates, and I'm both grateful and unnerved.
"One lesson. Never look away. Always be aware of your surroundings. For now, we will stick with the basics. Agility, balance, and awareness. Show me how flexible you are." I sigh and do the most that I could. From standing, I make myself a bridge and then drop to the ground. With minimum shifting, I strain myself to standing.
I used to be proud of that. Until I saw the boys pulling flips and stances on one hand while wielding their weapons. He nods and tells me to spread my legs. He walks up and presses onto my shoulders, forcing me into a split. I grip his hands when it gets too much, clenching my jaw and my thigh muscles straining.
"Relax." I look up at him
'How am I supposed to relax?!' I take a deep breath and slowly loosen my leg muscles. He pushes me a bit lower until I whimper, then he stops.
"You are to hold that posture for 5 minutes Dan." My head darts up.
"5 min- but sir-!"
"No bugs!"
"At least let my distract myself sir!" I snap at him. He pauses and stares at me.
"10 minutes for snapping, and 15 if you agree to folding origami without leaning on a table." I bite my tongue from snapping again and consider.
"I'll take the origami sir." He nods and walks out. I start tilting forward and gasp, swinging my arms to find balance again. Leo comes in carrying a low table, then master splinter with origami paper. Leo leaves without so much a word, and splinter sits across from me.
"Let's starts folding, Dan." I grit my teeth and start folding paper cranes.
