Chapter 7
-What Happens When You Finally Get Down
Nilk, Nonna, and Iccim were all laying down on the canopy of the trees, exhausted. Their muscles were burning from the strain they had just previousily put them through. Iccim almost had an extreme Nilk moment and fell from the very tops of the tree. The ground isn't the most welcome thing in the world especially when your over three-hundred feet in the air. Iccim's axe lay off to the side, and near that Nilk's crossbow. Iccim's pack landed closer to the edge of the now gaping hole in the canopy.
"Can we......not do that.......again?" Nilk asked, still breathless and having to pause in order to catch his breath.
"I don't plan on it." Iccim said, still in shock that the seemingly solid tops of the trees ripped under from her like a sword through paper.
"Yeah, lets not schedule that on our to do list for today." Nonna said with a smile. "I think we should sleep." Sleep had already begun to take the wide awake feeling away from her, slowly taking over her every being.
"Yeah, but wha---" Nilk began.
"NO!" Nonna said. "Sleep, now." Nonna had already begun to drift off and her eyelids hung over her eyes like that of stores in the market closing up for the night.
"Don't you wanna-" Iccim began to ask.
"Sleep, yes, yes, I really really wanna do that." Nonna said.
"Ok, then lets sleep, we'll figure everything out tomorrow." Nilk said, he had already begun to drift off into sleep, and his eyes were already closing up for the night.
"Finally...." Nonna said, well more yawned out.
"Night." Iccim said before closing her eyes and finding out dangling three hundred feet in the air is a really great way to fall asleep faster.
The trio fall asleep and eight hours later, Iccim is the first to wake.
"Are you guys awake?" Iccim questioned, and she was answered by the soft snoring of Nilk, and the silent breathing from Nonna, "I guess not."
Iccim stood up, and the only thing that seemed to be up besides her was the sun. She stretched out her back, and the thoughts began to come into her head. What if that happens again? What if we don't make it? What if one of us falls and we can't save them? What if......we don't make it back, what if we never see tomorrow? WHY ARE THESE THOUGHTS COMING INTO MY HEAD? Iccim began messing with the sides of her head, concerned about the sudden disturbing doubt coming to her. At this moment, Nilk begins to stir a little, not completely waking up, however Nonna has woken up.
"What are you doing?" Nonna asked a confusion dotting her usually confident face.
"We're not gonna make it." Iccim's mouth seemed to have a mind of its own, and even she looks suprised by what she had just said.
"What?" Nonna asked confustion still painting over her confident face.
Nilk sits up staring off into the distance, "Shes right, we're only setting ourselves up to fail."
"What is wrong with the two of you?!?!" Nonna says, well more shouts at the two.
"We won't be able to suceed." Iccim says, despair coming over her face, on the inside, she is very confused and has no idea what she is even saying and has lost control over what her own thoughts and words were.
Nilk looked almost puzzled by what was happening, he just woke up and he felt like his body had been taken over. "We won't make it, we're gonna die if we keep going." Nilk was staring off into the distance a blank desolate lost stare seemingly permanently glazed into his eyes.
Iccim spoke up, "Whats happe-. Theres no way, we're lost and we won't be getting out."
Nonna now puzzled more than ever. "What were you saying just then?"
"I wasn't saying anything." Iccim said, a desolate barren stare in her eyes.
"NO!" Nonna yelled, "You said something." Realization slowly dawning onto Nonna. She began thinking to herself I got to get these two down now. "Lets go down then guys, we should go home." Nonna said, mischief sparking into her eyes, she knew exactly what was taking her friends from her.
"Thats a great idea." Nilk said, a blank stare polluting his gray cool eyes. Nooooooo! Nilk screamed on the inside.
"Come on." Nonna says with a smile, and she takes all their stuff in her arms.
The three slowly make their way down, Nonna going down quicker than Iccim and Nilk, her plan coming to furition as they get closer and closer to the forest floor. Nonna reaches the ground by the time Iccim and Nilk were a good twenty feet off the ground. She begins picking up rocks, good sized ones, about the size of Nonna's fist. When Iccim and Nilk get about ten feet from the ground, Nonna chucks the stones straight at them, quickly scoring a headshot on both of them. Iccim and Nilk hit the ground from ten feet up with a dull thud.
"You guys ok?" Nonna asks her voice raised so they can hear her. The two weren't moving. Nonna walks over and checks on them. Nilk twitches a little, and Iccim was bleeding slightly from where the rock hit. "Hello?" Nonna says more like a question than an actual greeting, kicking the sides of the two that are now on the ground.
Nilk lets out a long groan, "OW!" he yells grabbing the side of his head. "That really hurt!"
Nonna smiled slightly as Iccim opened her eyes and groaned. "WHAT THE HECK?" Iccim yelled feeling the blood, "Did you have to do that?" Iccim questioned.
"It was the only way." Nonna said with a smile.
"Only way to do what????" Nilk asked, life coming back into his gray eyes, and slight hurt and his usually happienes quickly filling them back up life.
"To know the doubt right out of you, I did a good job huh?" Nonna smiled playfully and laughed, Iccim and Nilk joined her, "Its a good day when you knock your friends out of a tree." Nonna said with a broad smile spreading across her face.
