We all need oxygen. For some people who haven’t discovered what their oxygen is, they just think it’s that invisible thing that we all need to survive. For us that have felt love, we know it’s something else.
It all started when I was only seventeen. I hadn’t ever really thought about what would happen during that summer. It was only a few moments into summer and I was already the outcast once again. While most of my friends were off to some foreign country like Turkey or something, I was stuck here in Chicago. I had always been the one in my circle of friends to be last invited to things, but I was also known as quite crazy sometimes. So crazy it annoyed even my best friend sometimes. I found it funny and so did Sabrina (most of the time). My best friend, Sabrina, and I were best friends till the end. We had only known each other since seventh grade, but it was as if we’d known each other since we were young.
Sabrina was the beauty, but she acted like she wasn’t. She didn’t agree when we told her she was beautiful. One thing is to act like you’re beautiful, when you really aren’t, and another is to act like it doesn’t even register that you are. That was Sabrina. Her olive skin went well with her wheat colored hair and her blue eyes stood out most on her face. Her face was small compared to her eyes. It seemed as though everything on her face revolved around her eyes. Sabrina had a kind of way with people. She could make anyone feel like they were wanted. She was the kindest person I had ever met even though she had every right to hate everything. She had lost her mom and dad when she was in ninth grade. Her mom and dad died while they were travelling to Florida for business. Plane crashed out in some field and not one person survived. Sabrina and her sister, Amy now lived with their aunt and uncle. It was really hard on them but they learned to live with it. Don’t know how, but they did.
My friend (who wasn’t quite a best friend but she was getting there), Delta was always busy with something. She had so many movies that she had wanted to film, but never got the chance, so many books she had got, but never reached the end, because she had found new books. So many ideas that she never really liked to share. She was brilliant, especially when it came to science. When the exams came around, we all went to her house to review for the Science part. She was a genius but no one ever saw it because she tended to put up this wall. She barely let us in. I had met girls who bragged about their smartness, but she preferred to keep it hidden from the world. She told us, she wanted to make sure they saw the outside before they saw the inside, so if they didn’t like the inside they could at least be happy with the outside. I don’t see how anyone could not like the outside of her. She had brown almost black hair and green eyes the color of mint leaves. Of course, her glasses took a bit away from her, but it didn’t take away the soul in her eyes.
My other friend, (along with Delta, was getting to be a best friend but not quite yet) Addison, whom we all called Addie, hadn’t ever been one to settle for less. If she wanted something, she went for it. She loved a thrill. If it gave you adrenaline, she took it and abused it. Jet skiing was off her bucket list and we all hoped off her list of fun… Forever. She scared us when she did anything dangerous. It was crazy, the things she did. She didn’t have any limits, but she also pushed us to do the best we could. Her blond hair often took guys by surprise. She wasn’t some dumb blond, she was quite witty and sometimes daring, but only after thinking it through. She had blue eyes that faded with her tanned skin. Sometimes, we didn’t take her seriously, but in the end we knew what she was joking about and what she wasn’t. She was brave and daring and that’s what I admired most about her.
And then there’s me, Jayne, but I preferred Jaye. I wasn’t a rebel but I sure wasn’t a goodie good. I was somewhere in the middle. Dyed hair was a trademark of mine, you could say. I was one of the only kids brave enough in my school to try it. It started out as a test, then a hobby and now an obsession. I had settled for now on a faded purple, that was kind of lilac with black underneath. I don’t know about my eyes though, they’re a pale blue and it doesn’t really match my hair nor my face but oh well. I wasn’t exactly normal but I was pretty close to weird. Most girls talked about boys and nails on weekends, I was either gaming on my Xbox, dying my hair or hanging out with Sabrina, Delta and Addie (Yeah okay they might be best friends sooner than I thought). Sabrina called us the gang and when she did, Delta got so mad at Sabrina. She had this thing about being orderly and proper about things and I was the opposite. I’m just going to admit it now, I’m quite messy. Ask anyone.
