Chapter 1: Lauren
My alarm clock went offdragging me out of my dreams and reminding me it was eight AM andtime for another day of work. My on-again-off-again boyfriend, Markwas in bed beside me and he stirred when I went to get up. "Eightalready?" he asked me, still half asleep. "Yep. I'm going to getdressed now." I left the room to go find my work clothes. Markwasn't really who I wanted to be with. He was sweet to me, and greatin bed, but he just didn't meet all my needs. I longed to quit myjob. I hated it with a passion and hoped to settle with a man whocould support me and maybe a child or two. That would be me living mybest life.
As I opened my dryer to getthe outfit out of it I dried in anticipation of today my phone wentoff. I had received a text message. My face lit up when I saw who itwas. I had met Marshall Mathers about two months ago through a friendof mine who managed to get an invite to a party Dr. Dre was having.Marshall, as I had began to learn, wasn't the party type, but he hadmoney and that was something I was interested in. Plus, he was muchmore handsome than Mark ever dreamed of being. For now we werehanging out, but I had a feeling we were going to be much more thanfriends in the coming months.
"Are you still comingover tonight?" was all the message said. I figured I would play alittle hard to get and make him wait until after I got in the car todrive to work, or maybe even longer. As I took extra care to getdressed it ended up being about thirty minutes before I answered himwith "Yes." I drove all the way in to work and once I pulled intothe parking lot he sent me another message. "Come by about 7. Thatworks?" I thought about it. I would probably have to tell Mark Iwas working late, but I figured I could work it out. "Ok. Soundsfine." I was excited. This was the first time I had seen him sincefirst meeting him and I was willing to do just about anything to putmyself in the girlfriend position.
I hate my job. Currently, Iam the assistant to a local lawyer here in town. I literally runerrands, make copies, and answer phones all day. It isn't hard, butits boring, meaningless work. All I was thinking of all day is what Iwas going to be doing in Marshall's huge ass house. In fact, I wasthinking so hard that I forgot to remind the lawyer I work for, Mr.Dornan, that he had a very important appointment and when the clientarrived Mr. Dornan had to reschedule because his appointment withanother client had ran over and he wasn't about to make a payingcustomer leave. "Lauren, I need you in here. NOW." he demandedafter everyone had left. I knew what was coming. I was going to getyelled out and assigned another meaningless errand to have donebefore coming into work tomorrow morning. "I don't know where youhead has been today but I cant believe you made me miss the Smiths'appointment. You know they are very important clients." He wasstill going on of course, but I had quit listening. I was thinkingabout Marshall and wondering how long I would have to continueputting up with this bullshit before he rescued me. "You had betterhave all these envelopes stuffed and mailed before tomorrow morningor your job is going to be in some serious jeopardy." I nodded tomake him think I was taking him seriously. He walked to the door ofthe office and reached for his coat. "I wont be coming in untilaround eleven in the morning. They had better be done. Goodnight."Before I had a chance to say anything he left. There were about 150envelopes in a small box along with some papers that needed to befolded and put into them. I groaned. It was only five. I had betterget started if I wanted to get them done soon enough to leave forMarshall's. "I wish I could be anyone but me right now." I said, and I began my task.
