The lights flickered and blacked out, then the elevator swayed back and forth. We all tried to stay in one spot, but it was hard when you couldn't see and everything was moving and swaying. Nausea and anxiety squeezed my chest.
"Just stay calm!" Darcy shouted. Suddenly the elevator crashed into something, and I saw someone's hand shove Darcy. She went flying onto the other side of it. I couldn't see very well, but I know I saw that, and then something on the floor.
"Darcy?" Giana yelled. There was no reply, and when I felt around with my foot, I could feel her body on the floor. Somehow, someone slammed her head into the wall and she was out cold. It may have been a person.
Suddenly, the elevator hit the bottom floor, the impact sending the four of us flying up to the ceiling. I hit my arm hard on the light, and then I heard its glass breaking, and something sharp in my arm. Someone screamed as we all fell back on the floor.
Everything went strangely calm. There were no lights, but we felt around until we could help each other into our feet. Giana was the first one up. I was the last.
She tried to pry open the elevator doors, but nothing happened. "Dallas, Annie, I need your help," she called. I was frightened, but persevered anyway. With my good arm, I felt around the elevator until I reached the door. I heard Dallas trip over Darcy, but he quickly got back up and placed his hands on the door.
"Now pull!" said Giana. With all my might, I yanked on the door. It began to open, a streak of light entering inside the broken elevator. We continued pulling until it was big enough for a person to fit outside of it. Finally when it was open enough to go out of it, Giana squeezed through.
"We have to hurry! We're going to be late!" she exclaimed, pulling Dallas out of it. I began to worry. What if we're late? I wouldnt get any sponsors, and that means I could die in the arena. But I can't just leave Darcy there, on the floor, helpless.
Then again, what would she say? Her work shouldn't be put to waste. Someone must help her.
"Come on, Annie!"
I squeezed through, and then suddenly caught sight of my arm. It was cut deep by the glass from the lightbulb. Giana also saw it. "That's not very appealing," she hissed, carefully picking out one of the larger shards. She tore off a blue ruffle from my dress (I winced- what would Darcy say?) and carefully wrapped it tightly around my arm. It hurt though, because I could feel a piece of glass still in there. But there was no time to take it out, I thought as Giana tied a tight knot. Just hope nobody notices for now.
"There," she said. "Now let's go!" Giana and Dallas ran down the hall.
"Wait! What about Darcy?!" I yelled.
"Just leave her! You don't want to be late, do you? I'll come back!" Giana continued to run. I took one last look at Darcy in the elevator.
"We help you get home," her voice rang in my head. I realized how much it would mean to her if I did a good job and showed off everything she had built me up to be. Plus, Giana was right. We'll come back for her. I ran down the hall to meet up with Dallas, who was in line.
"You're next," he whispered to me. I looked and realized we were backstage, and Caesar Flickerman was waving goodbye to the District 3 boy; I think his name is Gold. Just in time. No time for nerves.
"Now let's give a warm welcome to Annie Cresta!" said Caesar, and I was lightly pushed onstage by Dallas. I smiled and waved at the roaring addience, who has no idea that my stylist is not awake, who has no idea there is glass under the accesories of my dress, and no idea how much I was unprepared for this moment. Nonetheless, the interview began.
