Sterling that night made two large T-bone steaks. One for him and one for ‘her’, in case she showed up. Which much to his dismay she did not. He even checked inside the barn to see if she resided inside. This also turned out to be a disappointment. Evidence of her resting there at some point was apparent, but nothing after their encounter that morning.
‘Why would she be so scared?’ he wondered as he ate by himself in silence that night. Shifters were not exactly common around these parts, but they were known about. Mostly people who could afford them had one, and from what he had heard, they were treated as an exotic pet. Sometimes given tasks to perform like service animals or working animals. The debate still was in question as to if shifters were actually human or animal and which rights should they have?
How the first shifters arose was still unclear. According to Sterling’s great great grandfather, one day the news it had stated that a woman entered the hospital with severe abdominal pain and gave birth to puppies three days later. Normally, the chromosomes of a human and a canine aren’t supposed to match up in number and therefore be unable to cross-species interbreed. However, when this news went international, other countries came forward with similar circumstance stories. Several multi-national genetic analyzing was done and it was revealed that such an event could occur under rare circumstances. Now cententuries later, Shifters were a minority in society.
Around this area lots of people owned horse property and used animals to work a farm or bred and rise for livestock. Sterling had inherited his grandpa’s farmland after he passed on and since his parents were enjoying their retirement traveling and he had no other schooling or desire to go anywhere else he moved in and continued working from home as an accountant.
As he finished his dinner and began to clean up, he wondered if he left out the steak on the porch if ‘she’ would come back for it, or if he should open the doggie door flap and leave it on the table, then recalled other wild animals that lived in the area that would surely become an issue if he started doing that. On second thought he put it away in the fridge to eat later. There was no sense in hanging onto something that needed to be let free to run wherever the wind carried her.
