Jughead first holds Betty when they're seven and watching a scary movie for the first time. Archie convinced them to watch one with him, but Betty's terrified. Jughead is pretty terrified too, to be honest, but he holds Betty close anyways. He tries not to think about how soft her skin feels against his.
He holds her when she comes over to his house in the middle of summer, crying her eyes out because she just got her first period and she's terrified of growing up. He tries not to think about how nice she smells.
He holds her as she cries about Archie's new girlfriend, Ginger. She sobs into his chest about how much it hurts to get your heart broken, and he tries not to think about how his own heart just broke, too.
He holds her when she's stressed about their first ever finals. Her mom comes barging into her room, talking about how important it is that they study now, even though they're on break. He tries not to think about how Betty's grip tightens around his chest.
He holds her when she gets her acceptance letter to Brown University. When she asks, he tells her he's crying because he's happy for her, but in reality he's terrified of facing life without her. He tries not to think about how close their lips are to touching.
He holds her when she finds out she got a job at The New York Times. This time the tears he cries are out of sheer happiness for her, and because they'll finally be in the same city. When their lips meet he tries not to think about how he's always been waiting for this moment.
He holds her when she finds out she's pregnant. They're sitting on the bathroom floor, arms tangled up into each other. They're going to be parents.
He holds her when she loses their baby, too.
He holds her when they're newly wedded and are being attacked with happy and celebrating relatives there to wish them a lifetime of happiness.
He holds her when the adoption agency calls and tells them there's a baby waiting for them in Europe.
He holds her when their son Noah goes off to college to start his own life. As he hops into his friend's car and goes into a - to him - whole new world, all the while waving to his parents with a somewhat absent minded smile, Jughead whispers something to her through their tears.
"I'll always hold you."
And he does.
