Jack was sitting on my head. He simply wouldn't get off my freaking head. Ugh. I watched the courtyard of the Castle from my window. Who needs to go outdoors when you can see it from a window?
Yet it was a truly beautiful day. The sky was blue, the grass was green, and I had bat wings! I turned towards a mirror and straightened my back. Slowly unfurling my wings, I spread them like a badass and struck a few poses. Jack rolled his eyes. In the middle of my Hercules pose, the door to my room shot open, hitting the wall with a loud 'thunk'.
I whipped around to see who had entered my room--
Oh. It was just Ella and Ani. How disappointing. I was hoping to feast upon some poor servant or fight a dashing assassin.
"Am I interrupting something?" She said, motioning to the mirror.
Ani coughed. "Katieposingandtryingtobecoolinfrontofabat."
"No, not at all." I muttered the next part, glaring at Ani, "Too bad you weren't someone else. I've been dying to see if I could drink blood."
"What?"
"Nothing." I coughed. "So, what brings you here?"
Ella turned, peeked out the door, and shut it quietly. "Katie, I found something out. Tyler is Anastasia's and Casper's brother."
I started laughing but stopped. She said it all deadpan, eyes hard. "You aren't kidding? Well, what makes you think that?"
She explained her reasoning behind it, how Tyler referenced them as his 'family', the whole schpeel. It seemed reasonable enough.
Jack remained uncharacteristically quiet through this. "She's right, you know."
"Huh?" I replied, shaking him off my head. He just flew back on.
"Katie, are you okay? You're talking to a... bat."
"Yeah, duh. He can speak. Wasn't that obvious?"
"No. He squeaked."
"Did not. He spoke English." Interjected Ani, as if that were perfectly normal.
Oh. She couldn't understand him. Fine. "Ooooh-kay. Well, he confirmed what you were hypothesizing."
"Okay." She looked around then joined me at the window. As she idly watched the trees move in a slight breeze her hand moved up to her chest and gently rested on a butterfly necklace.
A slow grin formed on my face. "Where did you get that necklace from?" Her hand snapped back to her side, her face paling slightly. "Casper?" She shook her head, some color returning around her cheeks.
"No... It's a long story. Say, should we go talk to the man of the hour? You seem rather interested in him." She winked at me, and I scowled. No way in hell would I like such an insolent, adorable fool! I refused to acknowledge her and simply walked out of the room. She followed me.
"Did you know there's running water here?" I said. Ella nodded.
"It's crazy!"
"Amazing." Ani countered. "Oh, there's a kitchen nearby. I heard they're making some awesome pastries. I'ma go grab a few." She dashed off. Jack followed her.
We walked in silence until I noticed some additional footsteps behind us. It had to be Ani, or so I thought. I turned around. "It's taken you long enough to catch u-" No. Not Ani at all. Not even close. Roughly 14 wingless Silvercloaks had massed behind us, staring at Ella. She had turned around at this point and looked rather confused. I struck a very heroic and threatening pose.
