(A/n): This is the second chapter! BTW, I've changed my mind about the third person POV thing, I'll change it back to the normal variable POV but I'll keep experimenting with the new writing style.Fort Huachuca, Arizona, USA, January 18th, 2020, Jacob's POV:
It was high noon and the sunshine was direct, searing rays lit up the field. I placed on my sunglasses to counter the bright light but the temperature was still a pain in the a*s.
Every inch of exposed skin was bombarded with sunlight as sweat covered my body although a large amount was also evaporating rather quickly from the intense heat.
The boiling temperature was on the edge of unbearable, it felt like being in a giant microwave as the heat could be felt in the bones. While helping to shield me from some of the sunlight, the ballistics vest and uniform made the heat worse and felt like a boiler.
It reminded me of the missions in Afghanistan but somehow worse. The sun was high in the sky and there were no shades in order to avoid its beams. It was actually unusually hot even for Arizona due to global warming.
'Why couldn't people learn their lessons about climate change' I thought before wiping the sweat off of my forehead with the back of my hand. I breathed heavily and slowly to cool down.
I was no stranger to heat, I worked with fire and napalm but this constant bombardment of intense sunshine was ridiculous. It's a shame the army prohibited the use of my custom grenades, saying that they were 'inhumane'.
I scoffed at the words. 'What the terrorists out there are doing is inhumane, they deserved to burn. They deserved to die after what they did." I tried to convince myself but I wasn't completely certain. Killing is never easy but after a while, you become numb to it and you start to like it.
However, the sun wasn't an excuse for training, even if it meant intense pain. "Just get over it, you're tougher than this" I told myself. Besides, physical pain is the pain that hurts the least.
Since Rainbow was disbanded, I was demoted to Army drill seargent.
I groaned lightly out of frustration I was rather pissed at first about being placed in the army and becoming a drill seargent of all things.
'I'd rather be a fisherman' I thought but you had to deal with it. They said it was for security purposes as the White Masks might have leaked our info worldwide. At least that's what they said.
'This could be considered a fall from grace' I thought while wiping more sweat off of my forehead and tapped my chin in thought and released a long, deep sigh.
'Such is life' I thought silently. Life is like a rollercoaster, it'll bring you high and make you feel powerful, immortal. Then, you're at your highest, feeling like the hero of your world, your story, life drops you like a stone, lower than ever before, making you wish you were dead. Some call it fate, others call it a tragedy, I call it... life.
' This is a cruel world'
Ever since Rainbow was disbanded, I couldn't bring myself to feel upbeat. Never have I felt so close to fellow soldiers from so many different countries and backgrounds before until many of them got brutally killed.
'That's the life of a soldier, you throw your selves into danger alongside your friends for the sake of peace. There will be moments when you feel like a hero but it will all come crashing down around you when those you cared about lose their lives...
'However, others lost more than I did.' I thought and clenched my fists so hard that my knuckles cracked while remembering the losses in the final mission against the White Masks.
