"So you're telling me that next month, you'll be homeless?" Trixi stopped filing her nails and held the phone tightly.
"Yes. We tried to do it on our own, not worry you guys, you know? But it's gotten out of our control. I hate to be the one to pressure you, but, if you could find a job and maybe help us out some. This is really a last-ditch effort."
Trixi grimaced. She was glad her father, who always seemed to look down upon her, had reached out to her. Yet, she knew she was the last of the three siblings to be called. Trixi worked part-time at a beauty salon as a makeover specialist. She made just enough to pay her rent and buy food. Her steady stream of admirers usually took care of the rest.
Her family knew this and she knew there were times where they murmured behind her back. She was always the 'helpless' child, the 'dumb' child, the 'useless' child. She hadn't done well in school so as soon as she barely graduated, she had opted out of college and moved to the city. Now, they needed her. And it felt good to be needed, despite the circumstances.
"Well, no worries. I'll get a better job and help as much as possible. How much do you need to hold off the bank?"
"We owe 'em $300,000. We've been working double shifts, overtime, side jobs, you name it. Your brothers and sister have been helping out so we're almost able to make the reinstatement payment but we need more help. They have lives, you know."
Trixi's stomach dropped. How could they have let it get so bad? Three hundred thousand dollars was not a small amount at all.
"I know, I got it. I'll help. I'll start looking for a job right now. I'll let you know when I send over the first paycheck," Trixi turned to power on her laptop. What was she going to do?
"Thanks, sweetie," her father sounded a bit surprised, "just don't you know...go to extreme measures. Keep your dignity and all that."
Dignity? What in the world was her father talking about? Trixi shrugged and said goodbye, tossing her phone to the side and drumming her fingers against the keys. She never really looked for a job before. Her job at the salon came out of the blue. She was walking her dog, Harley, and came upon a help wanted sign. And that was that.
Fingers poised, she hesitated for a while. Then she typed something simple. Something should come up with that search. "Jobs available near me" glared back at her as Google produced results instantly. She clicked the first one that wasn't an ad. Jobs offers popped up in her zip-code. She clicked the first one, job as a babysitter.
She was fairly good with kids. She clicked for more information.
'Three kids under the age of 10. Need a babysitter with experience. Looking for something long term. Should be able to work flexible hours and stay overnight at times. Needs to know how to cook and do laundry. Some cleaning will also be required. Will be looking after kids everyday. Contact if interested.
"Geez, she's not looking for a babysitter. She wants a full-time mom." Trixi clicked out of it and chose the next one that was requesting a dog-walker. It looked promising but the pay was too low. Maybe after all this with her parents was all over, she'll look up some part-time dog walking.
Trixi didn't know how long she sat there scrolling. Her hand was cramping up and her eyes blurred but at the very last page, at the very end, she found the one.
'Personal Assistant To Valerio Phoenix. High paying job. Salary starts 100,000/yr. Must have high school diploma, basic experience and resume needed. All applicants will be background-checked. To apply, contact May at 1-800-000-000 ext 2490.'
Miracles apparently did happen.
