Nash's POV
"Don't be nervous baby boy," my dad said over the phone probably reading that I was little nervous. "I'm alright dad, trust me. When did she say she'd be here?" I asked as my finger started tapping uncontrollably. "She should be there any second now. And stop all that tapping, I can hear it from here."
"Very funny. Hold on, let me call you back. She's here."
"Alright. Just be confident. You'll be fine. Love you."
"Love you too dad," I said hanging up and standing up. I watched as the person I was supposed to be meeting walked towards me. She was a fairly brown skinned woman with daunting features. Her hair was straight to the T, flowing past her shoulders. Her lipstick a strong red. Suit tailored to fit her full form with heels elevating her strut. This woman was 39? She looked no less than 25. Black really don't crack.
A smile graced her beautiful red full lips showing her perfectly aligned teeth. "You must be Nashley. Robyn Teller," she said stretching her hand forward. "Nice to meet you. Please, have a seat," I said as she sat opposite me. "You come highly recommended Mr. Brooke, or should I say Mr. Miller," she said flicking her hand, waving over the waiter while still maintaining eye contact with me. "Brooke will do. Haven't tied the knot yet."
"Excited for the nuptials?"
"Very."
"So your father said you have a proposition for me. And when I get a call from Gabriel Brooke, honey I know it's worth it. What are you gonna have?" Robyn asked right as the waiter arrived. The way she ordered told me she was a regular here. "Just the Garden salad will do," I said still remembering the promise back at home. "You getting some dick tonight girl?" she asked me, reading right through me. "How did you—"
"Honey before I transitioned I also worried about spontaneous sex as well. You good," she said with a hearty chuckle completely baffling me. "Wait. You're—"
"Transgendered? Yes love. Thought your father would have told you. So you know I worked harder than all these Jack and Sandra's to get this successful. Fiancé already tearing it up," her presence was strong yet comforting. She wasn't as cut throat as I pegged her to be, I think. "I'll have you know. It's the best in the business," I answered making her laugh. "Chile, you crack me up. So let me see."
Grabbing the briefcase I came with I pulled out a heavy manuscript and passed it to her. "Okay, so lay it on me. Why am I interested in this? Why do I wanna read it and why does America wanna read it.""It's different."
"Yeah but often times different or unique doesn't sell."
"It's scandalous."
"Now we're talking. Scandalous on what scale. From Monica Lewinsky scandalous, Becky with the good hair scandalous or Lenny Kravitz eggplant in my face scandalous?"
"Definitely Lenny Kravitz," I said with a wink as she yelped. "I'm in. But sell it to me. Why should this book go into production? From your own perspective why should I give it the time of day?"
I took a deep breath and looked at her. "Growing up I never had a figure to follow. We talk of gay activism but since the dawn of time the poster boy for anything gay is the white boy. We speak of significant strides in history like the Stonewall Riots and we talk of lgbt figures but the ones of color get ignored. If I dig deep can I really fill one hand with black gay figures who were given notoriety at any level beside a book mark? I searched so hard in TV and film, music but nothing. Every black gay boy needs some sort of affirmation that we can make it. We don't need to idolize the hyper masculine portrayals of homosexuality in the media. This book can do that. It can be a little aid. And a whole lot more. Not just to the lgbt but to the black community that still lives in the grey area. It's a lot to put on one book but trust me, it's provocative enough to make people ask the relevant questions," I said as I took a sip of water.
