Chapter 29
Joe's point of view.
I spent the night day dreaming on the sofa. Sleeping wasn't an option, and the only thing on my mind was Lola, and what they'd told her. Situations creeped into my head, and I couldn't stop the tears running from imagining her reaction.
At around half three, I managed to sleep, and awoke a few hours later. I was surprised to hear the kettle boiling, and the familiar sound of the toaster humming from the kitchen.
"Lola?" I questioned, rubbing the dust from my eyes. I said her name again, louder this time, however was disappointed to see Zoe walk towards me holding a steaming cup.
"Just me." she replied quietly, her voice softer than usual. She handed me the cup, and I took a sip, placing it on the floor beside me. "Toast is on it's way." she said with a small smile. I thanked her, and noticed the paper she was fiddling with in her hands.
"What's that?" I asked, and she handed it to me. My name was written across the front in messy ink, smudging in places. "It's from Lola." She replied, standing up and heading back to the kitchen. I unfolded the letter neatly, and began reading.
After going over it six times, I found myself curled up on the sofa, drowning in tears. Zoe perched silently next to me, occasionally biting her lip and skimming over the letter placed on the coffee table.
"I'm sorry, Joe." she whispered, looking at me with sympathy in her eyes.
"How's the baby?" I gulped, keen to get off the subject which was digging me deeper into the dark abyss of depression and blocking the only escape.
"She's good." she replied simply.
"She?" I asked, looking up at her with wide eyes.
"Yeah," she shuffled closer to me. "We found out the day before yesterday." I nodded, smiling. "You can't keep ignoring it, Joe."
"What're you gonna call her?" I asked, looking down.
"She's gone back to Australia."
My head shot up. I looked at her studying her expression, still in denial. She wouldn't of done that, would she? She can't just leave me here.
"No."
"Yes, Joe! And you've got to sort this out!"
She left me alone on the sofa, just staring at my hands. I took hold of one of the fluffy cushions next to me and just punched it, tears streaming down my face.
How was I supposed to cope without her?
