(Aris POV)
I read the entire Book of Genesis to Amara before I call it a night.
What I found ironic about it is that it's all about beginnings. The beginning of the universe and life on earth, as well as the beginnings of sin, the fallen state of the world, the need for a redeemer, and the promise of God's coming.
I get the beginnings part and related it to Amara and I, hence why I found it ironic. And I guess I do understand the concept of sin per se...
However, the rest of it, I felt completely clueless about.
For the first time in my life, I sat and read something that was difficult for me to fathom...the whole concept of a fallen state, the need for a redeemer, and the promise of a God or His coming.
I thought about the times that I held a man's heart in my hands while it still beat and the many lives that I've saved...while also taking them, but I understood it, deep from within, and I didn't have to read anything to do so.
I guess I'll have to wait until I get further into the book, before I can really form a solid opinion one way or the other.
A few days pass as Amara sleeps pretty heavily off and on while I continue to read to her, making it through Exodus and Leviticus...although I have skimmed through the rest of the book by myself.
I especially liked Ecclesiastes 3:3... 'A time to kill and a time to heal...'
Ms. Hughes visits as promised, but Amara doesn't speak much to her.
In fact, she doesn't speak much to anyone but me...a fact which I must admit I delight in.
I've also met the rest of the men that Remo put together. There are six in total now – Matteo Calvetti, Gianni Ruisi, Danilo Osso, Omero DiCenzo, Carmine Mosconi, and Cosimo Severo. And with Remo...he makes lucky number seven of my Italian crew.
When they aren't guarding Amara's room, they're out scouring the city, searching for that piece of shit JB.
Unfortunately, there's been no luck finding him yet.
Each day that passes that he goes undiscovered only increases the pain I am going to inflict when we do find him.
It's only a matter of time...
Cosimo, who is checking into Amara's background for me, has managed to find a bit more than what Ms. Hughes knows, but not much.
Due to Amara being born in that antiquated compound, there are no records of anything...no birth certificate, no social security number...nothing.
So...I sent him down to Mississippi to find out everything I need to know, which he should be calling me soon to let me know he's arrived.
I check on a few of my post-op patients before I regrettably do rounds with the idiotic interns.
I internally chuckle at how Steven won't even look at me as he mopes around like a scolded little boy with his tail between his legs.
In the middle of checking on our third patient, Cosimo calls, so I excuse myself.
"I'm here," is all he says when I answer; both of us using a disposable phone.
"Whatever it takes," I reiterate, even though it's not necessary, before hanging up.
I return to the interns and continue on our rounds.
We're nearly done when my phone rings...my regular phone, as I receive a frantic page over the PA system simultaneously.
