'Morning.' Ben grinned as the children walked in, heavy-lidded and yawning. 'Lovely, Susan. Thank you.' Mrs Sowerbery walked in with a plate stacked with pancakes drizzled in syrup. This morning they were eating in the dining room, and there was talk that Mr Craven would be joining them. 'We don't have any chocolate sauce, do we Mum?' Dickon asked, looking around the table for the craved chocolate. 'Don't you think you eat enough sugar?' she replied, but she disappeared into the kitchen and reappeared a few moments later with the sauce.
During breakfast, Mary caught Dickon looking at Robin once again. She nudged Robin, and as soon as she looked at Dickon with her bright green eyes, he looked away. She gave Mary a knowing look and carried on eating. Mary stared at Robin in confusion. Firstly, what did that look mean, and secondly, how did she shut up Dickon with just one look? Mary had to know - Dickon never stopped talking, and yet he did, with just one look.
After a very enjoyable meal, the children went back to the playroom. 'So, what should we do today?' Robin asked, marvelling at the endless moorland through the window.
'Well, we could do the Misselthwaite hunt.' Mary suggested, smiling cheekily at the boys. Robin and Tommy were blank.
'Basically, in teams we do a scavenger hunt on the grounds, and whoever wins gets to give the other team a forfeit.' Dickon explained, still staring at Robin in his lovesick way. Mary had seen many girls give Dickon that look, but had never seen it on his face.
'Let's do girls vs boys.' Robin said, looping her arm through Mary's. 'We are going to crush you.'
'Bring it on.' Colin replied, 'I'll ask Mrs Sowerbery to set it up.' Colin disappeared to fetch Mrs Sowerbery as the boys and girls huddled and talked tactics.
