Deme is his name. Being the size of a large truck makes him the smallest of his kind. His six legs and two tails cat like tails make him a fast runner and an even greater playmate for the others. His fox like ears twitch at my every word. Since his body was made from rock and vines he wasn't much of a comfy seat.
"There's another one dead ahead" I tell him cutting our conversation short. He looks forward his ears sound like falling rubble as they move.
"Why must they always scream at my coming I'm not as large as to harm them...much" Deme cared much more for humans than the others. He has never once harmed them. His brothers and sisters never meant any harm either but when making their way from point A to B the humans were to small the see. sometimes.
Deme was soon bouncing around the makeshift town they all stopped and watched us with awe. They shouted 'Eirene' I hated the name they gave me. I pulled my hood over my face to avoid their curious gazes. Deme sent me a smug look and I glared at his emerald eyes.
"What are you looking at" I growled and he faces forward dodging a tree."You and the other youse don't seem to get along well" I laugh at his language deme and the others only saw two types of humans me and everyone else.
"Deme...you or anyone else wouldn't let me near them to get along anyway." He gave me a shocked look
"False I would to!" He slowed to a trot and I rolled my eyes
"Fine let's go back so I can introduce myself." He starts running again trying to get further from the town all the while growling at me.
"Don't tease Melia!" He growls again and again after a while we starts walking again and I lay between his shoulder blades and stare at the blue sky. Deme all the while telling himself that I was 'just making my own stupid jokes.'
The sun was starting to set and the air started to cool. I was used to traveling with the others so I was also used to their forgetfulness in the fact I need sleep. Deme took the sky darkening as a sight that I needed food and sleep but due to my earlier stunt I think he forgot.
Since we kept running through the night we reached a meeting point sooner than intended. It wasn't anything much. None of the meeting spots are. Deme lay down close to a wall and instantly blended in. I walked towards his snout and sat next to it. He moved it ever so slightly trying to make me pat him. I obliged and he gave a strange purr much like tree branches rubbing together.
"Deme?" I ask and the purring stops he knows what's about to happen."Yes?" He asks in his tone anything but happy.
"I need to move to the others now." I tell him he wraps his tails around me protectively.
"They're on their way." He ignores me and I pat him again earning another series of purrs."Deme! Give me the child it's my turn" Grora's powerful voice threatened Deme in a way he didn't like. I look up and see Grora looking down at me. Grora unlike the others walked on two legs his arms drag along the ground. He was as tall as a redwood which made for interesting travels but a difficulty climb.
"Grora!!!!! Sit down!!!!" He must of heard me since his knees slowly bent his arms braced himself. Once the ground stopped shaking I started my climb. Deme had a hushed conversation with Grora but I was too busy to notice. My body was toned for this purpose so it only took me minimal time to reach my usual spot.
"Ready Melia?" Since his back was so large we never needed to stop to rest. Food was handed up to me whenever I asked. I don't know where it came from and honestly don't care.
"Ready G!! See ya around Deme!" Deme gave a huff of disapproval.
Once Grora stood up I climbed onto his head and pat him earning a chuckle much like crashing waves.
"Glad you could join me once again...have anywhere you wish to go?" I hum in response before realising I don't really feel like going anywhere in particular."No not really." The sun begins to beat down on me I look over my shoulder. Since Grora was once part of the earth he had plant life growing on him. Six pine trees grow on his back making for excellent shade since he was so slouched. Moss and ferns make a comfortable bed. Grora is proud of the trees growing on his back but he dislikes the moss. We can go days without so much as a word to each other. Like most of the others all he wants is company.
I'm the only one that is willing to give it to them. Or can.
Whenever we did talk it was trivial manners. the weather, what my travels with the others. It was funny when I would mention deme he always gave something like a scoff never happy to talk about a 'runt' as they called him.
When the days got too hot or the nights to cold I would settle into my makeshift house.
I sat on Grora's head as often as possible. Remembering my first time sitting there was strange. When I had time with ones as tall as Grora it had taken me a little under a year to get used to the thin air. I often fell ill sometimes it would get really bad and I'd pass out.
I never told the others.
They'd worry too much.
Instead whenever I began to feel ill I'd chew on bitter tasting plants that over the years I'd found out what worked to fix which symptoms.
The days passed by slowly I've lost count of how many days or years have passed since I was taken my my town.
I remember those days. Ones filled with grass, still ground and food at set times. The hilly scenery never changing. The thick sweet smelling air.
But I don't want to go back.
I love the never ending scenery. Sometimes we wander through oceans a gift of never ending blue. I loved everyday and it's new views. Sometimes I craved different interactions. Humans like me. But I'm sure I will live my life on the back of these walking lands.
I'm sure I will die on the back of one of them. then I will never be able to warn them about villages and their inhabitants. and they will crush them much like an ant hill.
The thought about living my very last breath wandering worried me so little.
In fact I couldn't help but laugh hearty at the thought.
