Judy knew that loving her was safer
Right before the bell rang, Katya looked up at Trixie, who was crossing things off of her planner. Her glasses were low on her face, and at some point during the period, she had thrown her curly blonde hair into a messy bun atop her head. She had earrings shaped like stars in. How precious, Katya thought.
"Hey, Trixie?" She said, not wanting to startle her too much. Trixie looked up from her planner and placed her pink gel pen down onto the table.
"What's up?" Trixie chriped.
"Well," Katya started. Katerina Zamolodchikova was getting...nervous? She had asked pretty girls for their numbers before, so she wasn't sure where this anxiety was coming from. It's not like Trixie would say no, anyway. "Do you think I could get your number? You know, for like, lab questions and stuff?"
Trixie smiled. Part of her hoped that she and Katya could become friends beyond just physics class, but she knew it wasn't likely. Katya was kind to everyone, but not everyone was her friend. "Yeah, of course. Gimme your phone?" She said, holding out her hand.
Katya grinned and passed her phone to Trixie, who typed in her name and number. Trixie passed her phone back to Katya, who added a pink bow next to her name. Too soon for a heart, Katya told herself.
The bell rang, signaling the end of class. There was only one period left in the day, and as she put her things in her backpack, Katya asked Trixie where she was headed next.
"Music," she said, blushing slightly.
Katya beamed at her. "Music? Do you sing or play an instrument?" Trixie Mattel had so many layers that Katya was excited to reveal. "I'll walk there with you, I have a study hall anyway."
"I sing and play guitar." Trixie was practically whispering. As she and Katya left the classroom together, Trixie noticed tons of eyes on her. She clutched a few books to her chest, trying to gain some sense of coverage or protection. Everyone always looked at Katya, smiled, and said hello. But now all of the most popular girl in school's focus was on Trixie. It gave her butterflies.
Katya was stunned. She wanted to sit in the classroom with Trixie and listen to her sing and play, but a part of her knew it wasn't the best idea. She wanted to make Trixie comfortable. "That's incredible. I would love to hear you sometime," Katya said, grinning from ear to ear.
Trixie giggled softly. "I'm not very good."
"I'm sure you're amazing."
Trixie felt her cheeks turn pink at Katya's comment. "Maybe someday."
Katya smiled at her as they got to the music classroom. Her and Trixie held eye contact for a moment, neither of them speaking. Trixie's cheeks were pink and Katya could hear her heart pounding in her ears. Just as Katya was about to speak, Trixie popped their bubble of silence.
"Thanks again, for today in the bathroom."
Katya's heart broke a little bit just then, remembering how the pretty girl was crumpled and crying just a few hours earlier. "Of course," she said, putting her hand on Trixie's shoulder. "If you ever need help, or anything at all, I'll be here."
Trixie smiled and felt butterflies in her stomach again. "See you tomorrow, Katya."
Katya removed her hand from Trixie's soft shoulder and smiled. "See ya, Trix."
Even after Trixie went to her classroom, Katya could still hear her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel her blood pump through her fingertips. She was absolutely electrified. Beatrice Mattel. What a lovely name for such a lovely girl. More than anything, Katya wanted to hold Trixie's hand forever and never let it go. She wanted to protect her against all costs.
