"How's he doing?" Slazo asked, once the doctors left the room. The head doctors looked at Slazo oddly. Slazo was confused, and repeated his question.
"He's...fine..?" The doctor said. Slazo breathed a sigh of relief.
"How much longer will he have to stay here?" Slazo asked. The doctor just stared at him.
"He can go home right now."
"But..But he fell! And hit his head!" Slazo explained. The doctor nodded.
"He's fine."
Slazo went into the room to see. Sure enough, Bearger was lying in bed. Now that Slazo thought about it, once the ambulance got to his house, everyone had been sending them weird looks. Were they homophobes? Jealous? Was Bearger throwing them off? Sure, Bearger wasn't your typical significant other, but that didn't mean he deserved discrimination from other people.
And Slazo would be damned if he was going to let that discrimination keep Bearger from getting the proper treatment he needs!
"Excuse me!" He called to a nurse in the hallway. "He needs more than this! Can we get him in an x-ray or something, or connected to an IV?"
The nurse hesitated. "Um, it's stuffed." Slazo didn't answer, so she continued. "It's not alive."
Slazo exploded and caused a scene. "Just because he isn't like you doesn't mean you can deny him the treatment he needs!
This also caught the doctor's attention, and everyone looked at him. He sighed, clearly fed up. "Someone do something with the bear."
Yes! A win for Slazo and Bearger!
Slazo was by Bearger's side as they took him to an x-ray. Slazo insisted he got a wheelchair, and the nurse obliged, however grudgingly. Slazo waited for Bearger to be done, and then they went back to the room. He held his hand as the nurse poked Bearger with the IV.
It didn't seem like the IV line was connected to anything, but then again Slazo didn't know what the nurse had in mind, so he didn't open his mouth.
"Nobody understands us." Slazo whispered to Bearger, and then kissed him on the forehead.
