Night fell, and I still didn't allow Red to get up.
"Please, let me stretch my legs."
"No."
"I have to use the bathroom."
"Hold it in, then."
"At least let me stand up!"
"I'm not letting you leave the couch until you're all better. Maybe tomorrow, if Papyrus' healing helps more. You can stay here as long as you want, but while you're here you need to listen to me. You'll thank me now, if not later." I say, my arms crossed.
He sighed and flopped back down, wincing as he did so. "Fine..."
"If you get up during the night, I'll know. I'm staying right here." I add, suddenly considering it.
"If you're anything like me, you'll fall asleep quickly." He contradicts, and I chuckle.
"You'll probably fall asleep first." I say, and he sighs again, much louder and more resigned this time.
As time passed, we both grew sleepy, but I fought to stay awake until I heard soft snores coming from Red. I smiled, pulling the blanket completely over him. Then I pat his head softly, and lean back in my chair. Sleep comes to me as well, and I drift off into a dreamless sleep.
I didn't know what time it was when I woke up again, but when I did, there were screams coming from somewhere. I jumped up, alarmed, looking around. I quickly realized that it was Red, apparently having nightmares.
"No! P-please!" He whimpered, then screamed in pain, twisting around. he was curled up in a ball, as if he was cowering in a corner in his dream.
"Red!" I hiss, trying to keep my voice low so I didn't wake Papyrus.
Seeming to not hear me or wake up at all, he continued to yelp in pain, covering his face and clawing at himself. With a worried expression, I kneel on the other side of the couch, gently shaking him awake. He opened his eyes wide, his eye lights extremely small, and I could see that he was visibly trembling. Not seeming to remember where he was, he continued screaming.
In an attempt to calm him, I pulled him close and put my arms around him.
"Shh...it's alright..." I whisper, repeatedly running a hand over his skull and gently rocking him back and forth. His screams died down, but I continued to whisper soothingly, knowing how to calm him down. When Papyrus was little, he would have nightmares and I would have to comfort him. But something told me that Red didn't have someone to calm him down where he was from. "Everything'll be okay..."
He grew silent, hugging me tightly with his eyes squeezed shut. His grip on my arms slowly relaxed, and his whimpers faded into small sniffles.
I stayed there with him, silently determined to be right there until I was sure he was okay.

I woke up with Red in my arms, snoring softly. He shifted a little, snuggling closer to my chest and hugging my arm tighter.
I smiled, looking down at him fondly. I didn't know why, but I felt the intense need to protect him at all costs.
His eye lights flickered on, and he looked up at me. Then he looked around and scrambled away, seeming embarrassed.
