I quickly loop my arm with Mia's as we step off the bus, we trudge forward and whisper quietly about last night's party.

"Do ya think Evan will call?" Mia looks at me while she fixes her top.

"Oh of course, he was all over you honey. He wants you" I say.

"I hope he does, making Destiny pissed is just a plus."

I smile wide and wink at Mia. Destiny. Oh pretty prom queen. President of our school and a shoe in for valedictorian. How she hated us. It's always been that way though. She would tattle on us in elementary for stealing gram crackers and scowl at us for saying "no no" words. If one thing was for sure Destiny Anderson loved to hate us like she loved baking cookies for a Sunday bake sale.

I remember that crazy party we went to last night. How Mia had been Drinking by the pool and Evan spotted her through everyone at that party. She lured him in like a snake does its prey. Before you knew it they were kissing while cuddling on the couch together. I sat back and giggled fetching them drinks and snacks. Evan was the schools golden boy. Blond hair blue eyed football player. Not only was he attractive he was Destiny's. It was the holy grail of potential guys for Mia to like. As for Evan, he was feeling her so much he insisted she take his number. It was quite a love story huh?

Mia goes on about how her and Evan had planned a date for Saturday. I listen but can't get my mind off that newbie on the bus. The way he looked at my best friend..like he knew her. Whatever he thought sure made her blush. Mia doesn't get flustered easy.

The long corridor comes to an end and we open the door into our first period class. What do you know, we're late. I would say this is early for us.

"Clare Valentine and Mia Carson!" our English teacher blurts as we enter with our perfectly glossed lips smiling.

He goes on and on about how we've been late to his class every day for the past week. Blah blah blah. After his eternity rant we take our seats and endure the rest of the day in peace.

My converse squeak as I turn a sharp corner going to my last class of the day, study hall. It's basically a free period and one I don't have with Mia(she's taking math tutoring due to her sucky skills). I lay my stuff on my desk and find my book.

I open it trying to read but see a presence standing over me seeming to wait.

The new kid.

"Hello Clare Valentine" his mouth turns to a smile that makes me uneasy. "Can we have a little talk?"

I'm not in the mood to talk. Not with him. Mia and I might be a bit antisocial and kinda tough but we don't go out of our way to be mean. This guy though, there's something that makes me mad. It's like his presence and the way he is. I can't put my finger on it but my inner self just doesn't seem to go with his. And that stuff he pulled on the bus? Hell no. New kids are usually shy but he's just..different..

"What do you want newbie? Haven't you annoyed me and my best friend enough on the bus?" I say.

He grabs a chair and pulls it across from me. Looking directly into my eyes he takes a seat. "Listen fledgling, I was sent here to claim something that I was meant to have, I want to talk about some stuff. To make you aware about what's going to happen"

I raise my eye brow. Fledgling? Um. What did he call me? We barely know each other and he says he wants to make me aware of something. I drum my purple nails against my desk annoyed. He must be mental. This guy is nuts.

My voice turns sharp cutting through the silence like a knife "Um dude no offense but I don't wanna talk to you, frankly you annoy the shit out of me and Mia,we have enough problems at home. We don't need to deal with some weird guy right now that we barely fucking know"

He gets closer to me and I see his eye color is black. BLACK. Black with some sort of light brown swirls.

He leans in closer.

"I don't like you and you don't like me. I can see your confused but you've got to listen. Do you feel the anger and uneasy feeling around me? It's in our blood to hate one another. That's not the approaching problem though, it doesn't matter at this point. I want to talk about my Mia." His eyes light up and a faint smile plays on his lips as he says her name.

He's right, I did feel it. The pounding in my heart like some sick feeling. Sick and hateful. It flowed through my veins like blood. What was going on?

"What do you mean YOUR Mia, We don't even know your first name. I don't know why your being so weird right now but you better back off before we both kick your ass!" I try to grab his shirt but his hand roughly catches my hand.

"Excuse my manners fledgling I'm Ashton Price. I go by Ash for short. I do not advise you to come any closer this might turn into a blood bath. And as for Mia? She doesn't hate me. He laughed letting me go. "In fact I'd say she liked me"

Ash was right, I was ready to rip his head off. Anger and adrenaline pumped through me.

"Stop calling me that. If you think you got a chance with my best friend your ignorant as hell. She's already got her guy, Evan. Leave us the fuck alone and stop stirring stuff up."

I collected my stuff and bolted for the door. It was 10 minuets before the bell rang but I didn't care. My body was telling me to get away from Ash or break his neck. Ash called to me saying something about me being claimed to, blocking it out I felt sick as I left the class. I grabbed at my stomach and doubled over. Gosh maybe I ate something bad at lunch. School food at Jefferson high is made out of mush.

Standing completely still I try to compose myself and not throw up. After about 7 minutes I start feeling better so I head to Mia's class. My head leans against the wall beside the door as the bell rings.

Out comes my very best-friend. Looking annoyed and worried as ever. I glance at her run her fingers over her seahorse tattoo. I know she doesn't wanna go home.

"Hey how was math?" I say as she pulls me in for a hug.

"For once I wish it would last longer, we can't go home. Not with my mom like this."

I nod in understanding. " But Mia we have too. You know there isn't another place for us to go.." I say sadly.

"I know." Mia says, letting me go.

I put on a fake smile and tell her everything will be alright. As long as we have each other it doesn't matter what Mrs.C had in store for us. We walk on and I try to cheer her up by talking about Evan.

"He walked me to some of my classes and even kissed me when Destiny had her back to us" she squealed. "He is totally my soulmate, even if he's a goody good." Mia nearly bounces telling me.

I laugh as she explained more about her day and her dearest Evan. That girl always is attracted to guys opposite to her.

She pressures me about how my day was but I give her very short answers. I kept my mouth shut about the run in with that stupid boy. I told her everything but didn't feel like telling her about damn Ashton Price. I don't wanna get worked up again..

We ride the bus home and stand still as the bus drops us off in front of our trailer. Looking at one another we interlock hands and swing the door open.

Whatever Mia's mom had in store for us wasn't good. We both knew this but would go through it together...now to enter our personal living hell.
