The Veil
Three
Cole
I push my way through the crowd inside the one of two clubs in our small town. I don't even know what the point in having bouncers stationed outside the doors are. They barely glance at an ID before just waving someone in. I think a ten year old could get in here if they try hard enough.
The music is blaring from the speakers, some God awful Britney Spears track. As I'm making my way behind a group of girls, one of them grabs my hand.
"Hey good-looking," she slurs at me, "wanna dance?"
I bring my other arm up, and pry her fingers off me. "No thanks, I'm looking for someone." I shout at her over the music.
She bats her eyelashes at me, and says, "We're all looking for someone."
I smile at her, not trying to be rude. "The woman I'm looking for just so happens to be the love of my life."
The woman takes a step back, and gives me a sad look. "She's one lucky lady then."
I turn from the woman, not bothering to reply to her. I start pushing through the crowd again, and then my heart skips a beat as I hear Sydney yelling. I turn my head to where I heard her from, seeing a man's arm around her waist, holding her securely to him. Nell is trying to calm the situation down, but the man doesn't seem to be paying any attention to her. The way he's looking down at Sydney makes me grind my teeth together.
I move to them, yelling, "Hey!" I practically push someone out of my way, followed by another, finally making my way through the people to them. I give the man a hard look, and demand, "You let her go now!"
Grease Hair drops his arm, but doesn't take a step away. He looks me up and down as I step closer to them. Without taking my eyes off him, I grab Sydney's elbow, and pull her behind me. I feel her hand in the middle of my back tremble. I know Sydney can handle herself in a fight, having seen her in action, so I don't understand why she's shaking. Maybe because this guy just gives us the general creeps.
"And who are you?" Grease Hair asks, trying to sound dominate.
I smirk at him, and reply, "I'm her boyfriend."
Sydney's hands on my back stop trembling. I don't know why I said that, especially since she asked a little while ago if I liked anyone. I hadn't lied to her. I don't like anyone. But it was the first thing that came to my mind to say to him.
Grease Hair laughs, and says, "Then you're woman is steppin' out on you." He points behind me to where Sydney is, "Her and her little friend there got somethin' going on."
"Oh, trust me," I counter him, "she is not stepping out on me. I keep her well satisfied." Why do I keep opening my mouth?
I feel Sydney pull on the back of my shirt, and I let her pull me away from the guy. When I've taken two steps backwards, I turn, and without thinking, put my hands on Sydney's hips. Sydney is not a very touchy girl, and I know this, but I just want her further from Grease Hair faster. She doesn't push my hands away as I steer her through the crowd, with Nell right behind me.
