The Veil

Four

Sydney

Man, I thought to myself as I finished my master piece, this is totally the best night to do this. The weather was perfect with a temperature of seventy-six and no humidity. Even though it was only six fifteen, the moon is out. The moon is big and bright, and totally gave us enough light for my masterpiece.

I notice that Cole is going through something tonight. He normally is talkative, smiling all the time, and laughing. Ever since the bar, he has barely said thirty words to me. His lack of talking is sort of bothering me, but I know that sometimes silence is golden when it comes to Cole.

I know that I should ask him what is up, but I know that sometimes people don't want to talk about things. If he wants to talk, he'll come to me. I wonder if something is going on at home.

Cole lives at home with his parents, like most high school students. Cole used to have a twin brother. When he was three years old, Cole and his twin brother, Cayden, were outside their house, playing in the creek that ran about a mile and a half. Some parts of the creek is really deep, measuring up to five feet deep while other parts of the creek is about four inches deep. Normally, the two would ask their parents to play by the creek, but since their parents told them to go outside and play, they decided not to ask.

They were jumping on the rocks, in the creek bed, playing a game of 'who can jump on all the rocks without touching the water'. So far, the game was tied. When it was Cayden's turn, he decided to jump to a rock that was about one foot away from his position. Cole had begged Cayden not to attempt it because the rock looked very slippery and said that he could fall. Cayden, even though he was three, was a very stubborn child. Once he decided to do something there was very little anyone could do to change his mind. Besides, he was determined to win.

Cayden readied himself and jumped. The rock was, like Cole had said, slippery. When Cayden's feet touched the rock, they flew out from under him, causing him to fall on his back and hit his head on the rock. The noise from Cayden hitting his head, from what Cole has told me, was so loud that he heard it over the water moving in the creek.

Cole pulled Cayden from the creek, noticing he wasn't breathing. It was at that moment that his parents showed up, and saw Cole pulling Cayden out of the creek. They knew in the instant that they saw him, he was dead. There was so much blood on the back of his head, which had been split wide open. The back of his skull was flat, from where he hit his head on the rock.

Cayden has always been the favorite of the two. Cole's dad blames Cole, to this day for Cayden's death. Their relationship has always been very toxic. Even though Cole's mom doesn't blame him, and his parents are still together, she barely talks to Cole.

It's a sad environment for a child to live in, but he has told me that after a while, it's something that you get used to. Living with parents who barely care about you, can have its perks. Cole doesn't have a curfew, unlike me.

Standing back to admire my master piece, I smiled. "Cole, look. Isn't it amazing?" My cartoon painting of Todd Green's car was actually pretty good. He has a big head, big ears, a really goofy look. The thing that is exaggerated about him is probably his outfit. I put him in a pink frilly dress.
