The Veil

I thought Sydney saw that the light was red. Had I known she was so absorbed with what her dad said, I would have gotten her attention sooner. Sydney is a great driver, which is why I had no problem letting her drive my car in the first place. I thought she saw the red light, but now, instead, I see the lights of the truck heading straight for Sydney's side.
"Sydney!" I yell to her, whipping my head to look at her.
Everything happens in slow motion. She looks at me, her eyes wide and terrified. Her grip on the steering wheel tightens, making her knuckles turn white. The truck hits us, just behind Sydney in the back seat. I feel something explode in my right side as the inertia forces the car to spin, making me smash into the arm rest on the door.
I hear a loud thump over the screeching tires, followed by Sydney screaming in pain. I try to look at her as I grip the handle above the door, but the force in which we've been hit has my body locked. The car continues to spin, eventually coming to a stop by crashing into a pole.
I cough harshly, making the pain in my side throb even more. My head is spinning, just like the entire back end of the car just was. The truck hit us with such a strong force that we're now pointed the opposite direction, and all the way across the street, up on the sidewalk. I hear a buzzing sound, but I can't figure out where it's coming from.
As I look over to Sydney, I see that she's just opening her eyes. She's squinting, as if she's blinded by something. "You okay?" I ask her, and then groan. The pain in my side flares when I talk.
"I think I hit my head," she answers, and then groans too, putting her hands on her head. "I may have blacked out for a second."
I hiss through my teeth as I reach for the door handle. As soon as I open the door just a crack, I instantly smell gas. The smell is so strong that I'm sure that truck hit my gas tank, and it's emptying itself onto the ground.
I force the door open, using my right foot to open it fully. My right arm hugs my side where it's hurting, while I reach up with my left arm and pull myself out of the car. I yell in pain as I bring myself out of the car. The light pole has smashed my front end right in the middle, probably totaling my car.
I hear Sydney groan again as the buzzing sound continues. My head is swimming as I look around. There's gas on the ground, starting at where the truck hit us. The truck itself is nowhere to be seen. Fucking typical.
Sydney coughs inside the car, and I slowly start making my way to her door. When I get to her side and pull on the handle, I cuss. Her door is somehow jammed. I look to the back end of my car, my suspicion about my gas tank being confirmed. I hear a deep cracking sound, and I look up to the transformer pole. In slow motion again, I see the pole break in half, and then bend over my car.
