After my encounter with the man on the beach, I didn't leave my house for another week. The only reason I decided I needed to leave was because I had no food, and I had run out of napkins.
I went to the same store that I had when I first arrived in Brookhaven. In the light of day, the Food Mart wasn't as shabby looking as it had seemed during the storm. The paint was old, but not chipping, and all the windows and doors seemed on the newer side lacking any sort of fogging that comes with old age.
I let out a sigh dreading having to go in and interact with people no matter how minimal it would be. Despite my dread, I knew I had to get supplies or else I'd slowly and rather painfully starve to death.
The door made a soft beeping noise when I entered and almost instantly a fat old lady pounced on me. "Good afternoon misses...Oh you must be new! Haven't had a new face since Noah came to town. How long have you been in Brookhaven? Did you move to town, or are you just passing through? If that's the case I can offer you some advice on where to stop before you leave! Hmmm, how bout it hun?
I stared at the lady as she rapid fired one question after the other. "Not long," was all I said before brushing past her.
I stocked up on non-perishables like rice and pasta, canned sauces, beans, and soups. I also grabbed at least a months' worth of frozen meat and veg. Not forgetting to grab the necessities like toilet paper, shampoo and condition, soap and the like.
When I got to the check out counter the same woman from before greeted me. She rang me up asking if I was bugging out somewhere, she had been joking, but I told her I was: in my house. She stopped talking to me after that. She probably thought I was weird and unfriendly, which to her credit I was both. A small part of me felt bad for being so rude to the lady. A very small part. The bigger part of me, the smarter part of me, knew that it was in everyone's best interest to stay as far from me as humanly possible.
She told me my total and I quickly paid and left. Outside I was struggling with my bags, trying to balance the numerous items in my arms and at the same time open the door. I almost dropped a bag, but before it could hit the ground a hand shot out and grabbed it.
"Uh, thanks," I muttered still struggling.
"Here let me hold some of that for you so you can get into your car."
"Oh you don't have to do- "I was caught off as the stranger grabbed some of the bags from my arms. When I looked up to see who it was, I was mortified to see the man from the beach.
"Quite the load you got here. Going somewhere?" He asked with a smirk.
I opened the door to my car, "Yeah, my house. Where I plan to stay until I run out of all this." I spoke as I loaded the groceries, he handed me the bags the bags he was holding as I did so. "Thanks, but I should be going."
"Would you maybe want to come out of your house sometime and grab a bite to eat?" I stared at him for a moment in shock.
"That's not a good idea," I deadpanned.
"And why is that exactly? Do you have some sort of infectious disease?" He sounded serious, but I could see a glint of amusement in his eyes.
"Yes, it's called I already told you no now back off before I kick you in the balls." I gave him a sarcastic smile and got in my car.
As I pulled away from the parking lot, I looked at him through my rear-view mirror. He was standing in the same spot I had left him with a grin on his face. I scoffed and looked away. Creep.
