Narrator's POV

Jamie Parker fell out of bed with a thump. "Damn," they hissed. Rubbing their leg-where a bruise would undoubtedly form later- they stood up and stretched.

Heading downstairs, they rubbed their hand through their hair. "Wonder what type of mood mum's in today..." they said to themself. Before opening the door to the kitchen, they put on their 'mask.' It transformed Jamie into a friendly, happy 11-year - old. But only on the outside. On the inside, they were still a quiet and shy person that just wanted to be themself.

"Morning!" Jamie said perkily, while crossing their fingers behind their back. Please let her be in a good mood, Jamie thought. Jamie's mother poked her head up, her ginger bun tight as ever.

"Hello. I got new cereal yesterday, be a grateful daughter and eat it," she said, making Jamie tense. They'd identified as non-binary for the past year, but their mother still refused to accept it. She also refused to call them by the name they used, instead calling them by their birth name, Rosa. Jamie thought it had something to do with their father's death two months ago. Their father accepted Jamie for who they were, and even got their mother to accept them for a short while. But after he was killed in a car crash, she went back to her old self.

Jamie nodded, got a bowl out of the cupboard, filled it with cereal and sat down at the table.

"Uh, did you sleep well?" Jamie asked. Their mother smiled.

"Thankyou, Rosa. I did, and had a lovely dream where all LGBTQ+ filth didn't exist. Wouldn't that be nice..." she trailed off. Jamie fumed. What the hell's wrong with being LGBTQ+? I mean, we're all human, they said to themself. They quickly ate breakfast and left for their room.

Jamie's room was nerd paradise. They were a massive Potterhead and a fan of anime. Their walls were covered in Harry Potter posters, and their shelf was filled with anime merchandise, with the occasional video game. Jamie picked up their phone and opened up YouTube. Scrolling through, they watched a few videos from TheOdd1sOut and JaidenAnimations. James and Jaiden always made them feel better.

It was around 7:00am. This is when the post usually got here. Let's just hope that their mother didn't remember. After putting down their phone Jamie grabbed the book on their bedside table. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. They were reading the series again. "Get the stupid mail Rosa!" Their mother yelled from the living room. So much for reading, Jamie thought before placing their book back down and heading to the front door. They went outside and got the letters from the mailbox. Same old, same old.

They looked through the post in their hands as they headed into the living room. Bills... Party invitations for their mother... More bills... Letter to Jamie... Wait. Letter to Jamie? They handed the rest of the mail to their mother. They looked at the seal. "Have you still got a letter for me daughter? What's in your little hands?" Jamie's mother asked with her hand stretched out towards Jamie. "It's for me, mum" they said back. Their mother ripped the letter from their hands. "Who would write to a girl like you?" their mother asked rhetorically. She looked at where the letter was from.
