Tony Stark isn't an easy person to become close too. Hell, it's probably a miracle he has friends. Even then, he's not very close to many of them.

He had many enemies. He could make a long list of just names of people he'd pissed off to the max. Mostly because a  good handful of them had come back and tried to kill him.

Though, real, true, good friends was something Tony lacked. He did have friends, and he knew he could rely on them. Most because a lot of them are superheroes, but that's not the point. He didn't have someone he could ca ll up any time of the night to talk too. He didn't have anyone to invite to his parties that he could talk to for more than twenty minutes, He didn't have anyone he was close to on a very personal level.

Now, a few things he did have is a garage full of suits,  a couple hundred robots, and a talking A.I. This wasn't always an ace in the hole. He is lonely sometimes. He wouldn't say he is craving a relationship, but that's exactly what was happening. He hadn't actually dated in such a long time. He didn't see it necessary, but as he got older and lonely, he couldn't help but want that kind of relationship. He needed a rock to lean against when he really needed it. He just had too much pride to try.

He didn't meet many people that feel the weird love sparks people always talk about. He hadn't even felt it existed for a while. Though, this was tested as he met the all "Mysterious" and  "Mighty" Doctor Strange. Tony had too much pride to admit the man made him feel something other than the friend comfort. Since the Thanos epidemic, he'd gotten slightly closer to the sorcerer. They never did much together, but they'd have mocking conversations and small talks about topics they surprisingly agreed on. Tony was too full of pride and embarrassment to even want to admit his feelings to the man. Especially for that reason.

The "Amazing" Stephen Strange was a man, You'd think with so much cultural diversity and pride in the LGBTQ+ community that Tony would be less scared and nervous to feel such a thing, but oh no. He was almost petrified when he anything towards Strange. He made sure to never show what was irking him. He would catch himself beginning to stare and he'd focus immediately. He didn't have to the mentality to feel that way towards people. He tried to make up an excuse.

"You're just going to make a fool of yourself."

"That's weird, stop it."

"Tony, you like ladies. Stop swooning over the man."

And for a while it worked. Tony had managed to dodged bullets in rapid succession for weeks. It was rather miraculous. Though, Tony always slipped up.

"Can I help you, Tony?"

Tony was suddenly disturbed when he heard Stephen's voice. He'd realised he hadn't noticed that Stephen had caught on to his staring. He'd be hold a leather bound book with old yellow pages.

Tony did his best to remain utterly still. He let the familiar insult snarky reply fall off his tongue almost as reflex, "Yeah, do you mind, I'm trying to get some work done here? I can't do crap with you perching like a bird. There are a hundred other rooms you could be in right now, yet you still decided to come in here and bother me"

Strange spoke back sharply, "What's the point in doing your work in the actual tower? you do realise you have a home?"

Tony was set back on an answer. He only came to watch Stephen and be around. He was lonely. He didn't like being cooped up at home. Unless he was working. The suits weren't working, he needed place to work with some kind of human reaction. He was petty if anything.
