chapter 7: angels (xx)

Walt hasn't stopped thinking about her.

He knows he isn't in love, because his mom says that love is someone with whom you wouldn't be stuck with in a room for more than a day, because you'd never run out of things to say. It's a crush, it has been for over four years.

Ana nudges him and smiles. She reminds him of the beach, even when they're in December and there is more snow than ice to walk on. Her skin is sand, her eyes are the water and her hands are the edges between liquid and solid; drawing him in whenever he got too far away.

    "Huh?"

"Would you bring me the solvent, please?"

He nods and almost trips over his undone laces. He brings it to her and has to avoid falling over her. God, she is too beautiful to be real.

They continue finishing the experiment and Walt has to be careful around her, he doesn't want to be caught staring at her too much. A girl with short hair nudges him when he is washing out the measurement cups and the Erlenmeyer.

"You're not going to get her if you keep being that way," says Holly, leaning against the counter.

Walt eyes her and shakes his head, "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Anaelle, you idiot. She doesn't go for nerds who are too shy to speak to girls."

    "I'm speaking to you, aren't I?"

Her eyes flash at him, "I'm not her, am I? I could help you, you know. Do you want her to realize that you exist?"

Walt thinks about the way she laughs and the way the corners of her eyes crinkle when she smiles too big. Or when she frowns when she gets a bad grade. The way she looks like she is about to hug him when the teacher says that their lab report was the best.

    "I do."

Holly smiles and Walt realizes that it's the first time in over a year that he's seen her smile, "Then I'll save you from your geeky self."

"What, you're going to give me a makeover?" He says. The idea is silly; unimaginable.

She winks, "meet me behind school at 4."

Shit, what did I get myself into? thinks Walt.
