My head drummed against my bedpost as loud music boomed through my eardrums. My headphones sealed my ears from the bickering noise of the world, but my mind still failed to void the multiple speeches in my head. Something about going to the pool party tomorrow night, just didn’t feel right.
Taking a deep breath, I readjusted my position on my tranquil bed. I lay on my back as my right arm rested easily on my forehead. Closing my eyes, I patted my left hand on my side. In between dramatic song shifts, I felt my breathing get steady as my mouth slightly parted. My lips smacked against each other, as I hummed along to the melodies.
Abruptly, a booming knock dished against my abdomen and I squeezed open my eyes to a see an overly excited Summer, standing in front of me. I raised an eyebrow at her as I specked up from my current position. Narrowing myself at her, I rolled my eyes, while tearing the headphones away from my face.
“Hey, sleeping beauty.” She giggled as she jumped on to my bed swiftly. I slid to the side, giving her space to get into the comforter with me. She quickly rushed to my side and tangled her bare legs with mine. She rested her head onto my shoulder, as I rested mine on top of hers.
“When did you get here? I didn’t know you were coming.” I asked suspiciously as I scrolled through my phone.
She lifted her head up, staring at me carefully, “I got here when you were busy with god knows what. Do you want me gone?” She pouted as she laid her head against my shoulder, once again.
“No, I never said that. You practically live here and there’s nothing I can do about it.” I joked.
Her lips formed an ‘O’ as she pulled away from me. “You’re such an ass! But true, I might just live here from now onwards. You sure do enjoy my company, don’t you?” She teased, sticking her tongue at me.
I rolled my eyes once again as I restored my head against my cold pillow. I stared at the ceiling as I could feel Summer’s gaze at me agitatedly. She inched closer to me as I turned my head to look at her, “What?” I asked.
“You seem so quiet. And you were so distanced in lunch. In fact you were busy staring at her.” She spilled out, as I comprehended her words. Did she just say her? She knew?
“Who?” I blurred out, interested by the conversing instantly.
“Duh. Serena.” She winked, as I turned a bright shade of pink. I felt like a thirteen year old boy, day drooling about his first crush. But this, Serena, she was more than a crush but less than love. I couldn’t love her possibly, could I?
She deserved better, I mused to myself.
“Ah, Daniel has a crush!” Summer clapped her hands together, before she pulled at my cheeks slightly.
“No, I don’t have a crush.” I replied, pushing Summer away from myself.
“Don’t lie, liar.”
“I’m not.”
“Oh, so you wouldn’t mind if Kyle asked her out tomorrow to the pool party?” She asked, twirling her long hair stands in between her fingers.
I jotted up, as my body fumed with jealousy. Serena is mine, no one can have her, and I assured myself.
“What the fuck? Kyle wouldn’t do that! He knows I like her!” I yelled. But this clearly wasn’t a wise choice as Summer jumped at me.
“I knew you liked her! OMG! You like a girl. This. Is. Just. Wow. I’M SO HAPPY!” She hissed loudly. Straddling me in between her legs. I flinched under hold, as her fingers accidently came across my covered chest.
“I’m so s-sorrry, Dan.” She stuttered, as she sat on her knees. Her shakings hands patted off my chest as she avoided eye contact with me. Rapidly, I felt bad for flinching. It’s not like it hurts physically, but the pain rushes through my mind, as a cloud of old memories paddle like an echoing gaze around me.
I tilted her chin upwards, as she slowly flickered her eyelashes at me. “S, it’s okay. It doesn’t hurt me, you know.” I told her, rubbing my hands against her covered shoulders, hoping that this would calm her. Mistakes happen, but one can do nothing but move on and learn from them. Nobody’s perfect.
Except Serena, my consciousness added and I smirked. She was perfect.
I rubbed my thumb against her damp cheeks, as tear beamed out of her pupils cautiously. “Shh, it’s okay.” I whispered, as I pulled Summer’s body against mine on, cradling her with a tight hug.
Summer was a fragile girl that needed to be looked after all the time. My past haunted her more than it feared me. Seeing me in pain caused her heartache. She loved me and I loved her. She was my sister.
“So what brought you here?” I questioned, trying to shift the pensive sadness in the room.
“Oh, I forgot. I cam here to ask you that if you were still up for the pool party? I mean Serena will be there and-“
I interrupted, “of course I’m coming. But I’m mostly going because you’re going.”
“Yeah right.” She honks, lifting her body away from me as she wipes tears away from her eyes.
“Hmm.”
“I should go now, Kyle said he’ll go shopping with me later today. But I kind of blackmailed him. I told him that I would help him get with Cassie. I honestly don’t know what he sees in her. I mean she’s my friend and all, but I love you guys more and Cassie is a bitch.” She puckers, and I chuckle.
Do all girls shit talk behind their friends? A man would never know.
But is my Serena like that? Does she hate on people behind their back? Does she talk about me? Does she think about me? I don’t know about her, but she’s solely the only living soul that occupies my mind like a fitful magnet.
