The room is dark
except for one light
from my television screen.
I hunch in front of the harsh glow
my eyes are wide and dry,
and my back begins to ache.
My fingers rapidly and violently
smash at the buttons of my controller
to the point that blisters form.
But none of that matters
when I am in a different world.
Finally I’ve done it,
I’ve escaped from my reality
and found a new world
filled with wonder and magic;
a place where I can be anyone.
A boy, a girl, a ten-foot beast.
Maybe even smart, pretty, strong?
In this mythical and colorful place
I battle bandits, evil sorcerers, and dragons.
I walk through town
with my head held high,
because here everyone knows my name
everyone knows I matter.
In this world I am
The Chosen One.
Until I die an untimely death
Caused by an arrow to through the chest.
I let out a final cry
before I fall into a reflecting pool of red.
The screen fades into black,
and I catch a glimpse of myself
with my sunken eyes and chapped lips
my nappy hair and my dotted skin.
I look terrible,
but I shrug and press x.
I can worry about that in the morning,
for now Let’s Play.
