A soft breeze drifted through the windows. Brooklyn sat next to her bed twirling her hair in one finger for a minute or two before dropping her elbow onto the bed and pushing on it, pulling herself up. She walked over to the window, almost every floorboard she stepped on making a deafening creaking noise. Brooklyn stopped and placed a hand on the broken windowsill, a flake of old stale paint was chipped off by the draft. She watched as the white spec drifted slowly, but quickly, onto the dusty grayish walkway.
Brooklyn reached a hand out to close the window but flinched when she heard the door behind her pulled open. Even though she probably thought she knew who it was, without turning around, Brooklyn said
"Who's there? Is that you, Felix?"
The unknown figure begun walking towards her and she spun around to look at them on her heel
"No, I'm not Felix. But I'm a friend of his." The stranger took his hat off and an old, wise face looked directly at her. Brooklyn brushed her fringe to a side and looked back at the elderly man. She brushed her foot against her leg awkwardly, to her it felt like the man was looking into her soul. Like he was talking to her from inside. She pushed a handful of her dark purple hair onto her back then pulled two black hair bobbles out of her coat pocket. She parted her hair into two sections then tied them into high ponytails pulled tight to her scalp.
"Who are you then?" She mumbled, just loud enough for him to hear.
"My name is Mathious Kapono, but you'll call me Mr. Kapono" He announced smiling softly at her and at taking his robes off, chucking them onto the bed as if he was a five year old running into a new house for the first time. Mathious admired her pure blue eyes and tilting his head the slightest bit.
Brooklyn put her foot back onto the ragged rug and shuffled it back and forth, forcing a musty smell into the air. Brooklyn broke eye contact with him searching the room with her eyes trying to find something else to look at.
"Can I ask why exactly are you here?" She said fixing her gaze on a leak in the corner of the ceiling
"Brooklyn, you've been chosen. The earth mother says your one, you have the ability, you can know. Brooklyn you aren't any ordinary girl" he replied trying to get her eye contact back. He leaned on the back of the bed, it moaned and shook a bit, adjusting to his weight.
"Sorry but can i hear that again, this time in English. Look, I'm not special, I'm the most normal girl there is." She scratched the back off her head pretending to be dumb and cursing quietly under her breath when her nails accidently caught onto a strand of hair, pulling it out at a ghastly speed.
"Let me guess, you want to take me somewhere else, you want to put me up for adoption and make me go to school." She spoke sarcastically, half rolling her eyes.
Mathious glared at Brooklyn, forcing her gaze back onto him.
"The energy you have, oh the energy you have. You see, let me put it this way. There are some people in this world, who know what others don't, who see what others don't, and who can do what others can't. Your one of them, and do am I. So is everyone at Xenophallak. They get chosen for a reason. If you trust me, then you would accept the Earth Mothers invitation to be different, to stand out, and be amongst others just like you." He stood back up straight and took a few small steps towards her. His long black hair blew about in the wind, and Brooklyn returned a soft smile he had given earlier.
Mathious squinted for a few seconds before his eyes adjusted to the sudden rush of early light flying into the room. Brooklyn didn't flinch at all, but somehow managed to stare directly into the warm heat of the sun.
She turned towards the stairs on the ball of her toe, twisting the rug into a neat spiral, and letting dust jump into the atmosphere enthusiastically.
Mathious also rotated towards the stairs after seeing Brooklyn turn, just nowhere near as energetically. In fact to be specific, he edged round about 3 inches every 2 seconds.
The stairs creaked and a cloud of black hair appeared, followed by a small boy with murky gray eyes and a wide grin. Brooklyn copied his grin excitedly and ran up to the boy, ruffling his frizzy hair
"Felix!" She exclaimed moving her grin into a small smile and hugging Felix
"Hiiiii Brookkssyyyy!" Felix said jumping up and down, laughing wildly. Mathious let out a small smile before walking up to them both and coughing, announcing himself.
"If your coming, then we need go now." Mathious clicked his fingers by his side and a small raven hoped out of his pocket. He chucked the jet black bird a seed and watched as it flapped over to the bed. Brooklyn and Felix came apart, tilting their heads slightly and half gaping as the raven scooped up the hood of Mathious' robe, then his hat, all in one beak. The bird hoped to the edge of the bed, then a small cabinet, and flew over to Mathious. Mathious gently edged his robe and hat out of the ravens mouth before offering his left hand as a perch.
Brooklyn and Felix watched in awe as the shadowy figure of a raven twitched and hoped slowly onto Mathious' hand. He lowered his hand to his pocket again, and the bird flapped in, surprisingly not taking up any space at all. It looked as if the raven had just dissapeared, there was no lump in Mathious' pocket at all. Brooklyn turned her head straight and pushed Felix's back up as well, they both squeezed each other's hands hard.
"When your ready, get on my back" Mathious clearly explained. There was an explosion of white smoke, Felix shook his head for no apparent reason. Brooklyn yanked her hand out of Felix's and swiped at the mysterious cloud. They both froze when a loud squak erupted and the smoke melted into thin air, leaving a large Hypogriff stood in the middle of the room gently flapping its wings proudly. Felix didn't dare move but scanned the room quickly for Mathious, he wasn't anywhere.
Felix squeezed Brooklyn hard, his teeth chattering, Brooklyn looked down at him and loosened the grip.
"Felix do you think th-hats Mathious?" She said gripping his brown furry hair and pointing a shaky finger at the brown hypogriff which was flapping its wings proudly.
Felix remained silent occasionally looking around then burying his face in Brooklyn's coat. Brooklyn exchanged glances with the hypogriff, admiring its deep emerald eyes. The beast walked towards them slowly, it's shoulders broad. Felix hid behind Brooklyn who rubbed her eyes, rapidly blinking to check she wasn't dreaming.
The hypogriff came to a halt, now standing directly in front of them. The magnificent creature lowered its head slightly, offering them a ride. Brooklyn obtained a safe smile, moving Felix to her side. Felix glared at the hypogriff, also acquiring a secure grin.
