I felt my heart jump into my throat as the red alert siren began blaring throughout the entire ship. This was just supposed to be a rescue mission, and frankly, that was all I was prepared for. My first assignment was quickly turning into something that was very clearly over my head.

"Arrival at Vulcan in five seconds." the ship's pilot began the count down. "Four, three, two-"

And just like that, we were shot out of warp and into a war zone. Pieces of destroyed ships floated through space in front of us and the realization that Jim's crazy rantings were true washed over everyone. The ship began to shake as we traveled through the metaphorical minefield. "Emergency evasives." Captain Pike ordered as we were struck on the side, causing the entire ship to tip before it regained its stability. "Damage report."

"Deflector shields are holding." someone answered as I gripped onto the railing next to me, my knuckles turning white in a matter of seconds.

"All stations. Engineer Olson, report." Captain Pike remained impressively calm as we began heading right for a large broken off piece of one of the other Starfleet ships. "Full reverse." Captain Pike called to his pilot. "Come about starboard, ninety degrees. Drop us down underneath them, Sulu."

Nodding his head, the pilot, Sulu, dropped the ship's nose down in an attempt to go under the debris. For the most part, it looked like we were going to just avoid a collision, but as the rear end of the ship passed under, there was an eerie scraping sound from above.

Explosions continued to go off all around us and the nervous chatter on the bridge of everyone checking and rechecking their reports to the Captain was deafening. The space surrounding us was no longer a dark black abyss but instead, a graveyard engulfed in an orange haze from the shining sun in the distance.

Then it came into view; the ship that had caused all of this destruction. It was easily the largest and most menacing ship that I had ever laid eyes on and just thinking about all of the terrible ways they could blow us apart sent shivers up my spine.

"Captain, they're locking torpedoes," Spock warned in a chilling tone.

"Divert auxiliary power from port nossels to forward shields." Captain Pike countered the problem with a solution in no time.

Despite the power diversion to the forward shields, I still watched in horror as torpedoes emerged from the attacking ship and flew with a sort of grace through space and into the sides of our ship. When the explosion went off the entire ship shook hard, causing the lights to flicker and the alarm to seemingly blare even louder. It was at that moment that I wished I was sitting instead of standing.

"Sulu, status report."

The yellow-clad pilot drew in a sharp breath. "Shields at thirty-two percent. Their weapons are powerful, sir. We can't take another hit like that."

"Get me Starfleet command." Captain Pike requested as his grip tightened against the armrests of his seat.

Spinning around fast in his chair, Spock looked up at Captain Pike with the most fearful look a Vulcan could muster. "Captain. The Romulan ship has lowered some kind of high energy pulse device into the Vulcan atmosphere. Its signal appears to be blocking our communications and transporter abilities."

"All power to forward shields." Captain Pike gave the order to give the shields everything we had. "Prepare to fire all weapons."

As the feeling of imminent doom leered over everyone on the bridge, there came a sudden beeping noise from Uhura's station. "Captain, we're being hailed." she informed.
