If you're not sure if they're homophobic or not, you should test the waters. For example, bring up an issue like LGBTQ+ rights and see how they react. Or possibly bring up a same-sex couple in a show/movie to them and watch how they react.

If they are homophobic for religious reasons, try looking at your/their religion's sacred text/book (e.g. the Bible) for examples of ways your/their god(s) condone homosexuality. You could also find some crazy things that your/their religion's sacred text/book condemns and use it as an example of how your/their religion isn't always right when it comes to right and wrong.

If they are homophobic and you feel like your safety would be threatened by coming out, then don't do it. If you do think you're safety would be threatened but you still decide to come out, make sure there is someone with you that you trust or you have someone you can stay with if needed.

Good luck!
