L lived to see another day and joined the rest of the task force in secretly planning the Mira meet while Light was out running fruitless errands for L. He and the men tidied up last minute details and swept over the blue prints of the building they were to meet in one final time. L didn't want any detail missed, but if he were being honest with himself, he was struggling to keep up and remember it all. His thinking had become so clouded from the injections, but he couldn't let anyone know. He would be taken off the case and the whole plan ruined if they knew.

The meeting place was an abandoned building removed far enough from the city that the likelihood of civilians being present was next to nothing. There weren't many great places to set up a sniper besides a small tower on the East side, blocking a rear exit. The west side was forested, and the rest was open field and old back roads.

According to the untraceable emails the Mira group had been sending L, he was to come alone. L had Watari drop him off a quarter mile from the building. The distance should not have been anything worth considering; but it felt like miles across desert sand to L.

"Stop!" a booming male voice echoed through the old building as L stepped inside. L leaned against the door frame, breathing heavy, sweat beading down his face. He had hoped to not show weakness but it seemed that he would not be able to hide it any longer.

Footsteps against metal stairs echoed annoyingly through the large, empty room. "You don't look well," the same voice said, but it was closer and not as loud.

"I have a cold," L joked, straightening out to face his foe. "Don't come too close. I might be contagious."

The man was olive skinned and well built; tall and broad shouldered. His face was handsome, though, in L's opinion, not as handsome as Light, the original and far better Kira. He stopped at the bottom of the steps, facing L and introduced himself, "I'm Antonio Esposito," He held his hands out in either direction and several men appeared from the darkness, "And these are my men."

L attempted to look unintimidated but the truth was he had 4 men against about 24. Not only that, but his 4 men were severely limited in what they were capable of. The angles given by the windows didn't offer much for choosing a clean target. He just hoped his plan would work. It had to.

"So, you're the idiot going around pretending to be me," a familiar, calm voice echoed from behind L, sending a chill up his spine. "I've got to say, I'm offended."

Antonio went pale, "You are alive."

"Kira." L was genuinely surprised as he wheeled around to face his husband, "What are you-" L was cut off as Antonio lurched forward and grabbed L from behind, holding his entire body secure so he couldn't resist. Another man yanked on his hair and ripped L's head to the left, exposing his soft flesh. "AH!" L screamed as he felt the stabbing sensation of a needle enter his neck.

Just as quickly as he was grabbed, L was released; thrown into Kira's arms. Antonio and his men made a mad dash for the exits. L looked up dizzily at his husband, searching his eyes frantically. No. He saw only red. Kira's lips curled into a wicked grin. L attempted to free himself from Kira's grasp, but he could not. "You really thought you could destroy me?" Kira asked L as the terrorists of the Mira organization began screaming, convulsing, and grabbing their chests. "I'll finally be rid of you."

"No!" L shouted weakly. He looked at Kira, angry, "Fuck!"

Kira smiled as he watched the men drop dead one by one. He then dropped L to the ground and drug him by the left wrist with his right hand as he walked to the center of the building, careful to avoid the windows. Facing L, Kira lifted L by his wrist and removed a small knife from his pants pocket. L could barely lift his head, but he searched Kira's face for any sign of Light at all. It was too late though; the god had completely taken Light over. It suddenly seemed fitting that both he and Light should die right then.

Kira stabbed L in his left side, pulling the blade forward and making its bloody exit out of his body near his chest. Blood spattered across Kira's maniacally smiling face. L's mouth was agape but he couldn't scream; he just choked as shock came over him. Kira brought L into his body and spitefully kissed his lips.

Collapsed in Kira's arms, completely drained of all energy, L gave in, at last. A final tear streamed down his cheek as his eyes closed for their final time, his last image being a flash of red. In the distance, he could hear bells ringing, and swear he felt the cold sting of rain upon his skin. He was somehow back on that rooftop. He was leaning his ear, purposefully enticing Light into the rain, just to see if he could, for his own amusement, that silly grin across his face. Knowing full well where this would eventually lead, he stood there, doing it anyway. It couldn't be helped. Besides, the part of him that was Light would never die.

Kira threw L's body to the ground and watched him bleed out. Suddenly, Kira felt overcome by an impulse to write in his Death Note. But why? Everyone was dead, and soon the building would burn. The Task Force would just think the plan went horribly wrong and that Light was a suffering Widower who narrowly escaped, determined to avenge his late husband's death. None of that plan included writing in the Death Note. He wanted L to die without it so nobody could prove L died by Kira's hands.

Unable to resist the urge, he pulled his Death Note out of his pants and opened it. He couldn't stop himself from writing. "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Kira whaled, dropping to his knees beside L's limp body as though in agony. His back arched, face contorted, veins pulsing as though he would hemorrhage at any moment from an aneurism. The Death Note became rigid in his crumpled hands, cracked across its cover like the earth at a fault line, and an immense white light burst through it, cascading like a beam into the heavens. It lasted only a second, like a bullet shooting into the sky. Perhaps a message to the heavens. The Death Note then burst into searing flames which quickly spread across the floor, and despite attempting to drop it, Kira could not. He stared at his burning hands, the flesh melting away, screaming in utter hysteria, his brown eyes weeping uncontrollably. 'What the fuck is happening?' He thought.

A few moments later, Light felt as though he were waking from a nightmare just to realize it wasn't one. "L?" Light looked over at his lovers crumpled, bloody body, "L!" He screamed frantically, grabbing at him painfully, every nerve in his hands exposed. "oh my God, L. Oh my God." Light looked up and took in his surroundings. The smoke and fire covered everything. "I'm not letting you die here."

Despite the dizzying agony causing Light to vomit, he still managed to lift L off the ground and carry him out of the burning building, hoping it wasn't too late to undo what had been done. He collapsed just outside the door as the Task Force ran to him. He heard them calling, but he couldn't make out what was being said. That was the last thing he remembered before losing consciousness.
