"How long until the party?" I ask Adeline as I climb into the passenger seat of her car.
"About two hours," she replies starting the car.
"One hour to eat, one hour to prepare?"
"Definitely not. Thirty minutes to eat, an hour and a half to prepare."
"Dang, how long do you need to get into a swimsuit?"
"Hey, beauty has no time limit. Plus, I have to do my hair and makeup."
"Adeline, we are going to a pool party. You are going to get wet, you don't need to do your hair and makeup."
"Oh please darling, Noah needs to see what I'm offering if he's going to ask me to prom. Plus, I want to get some cute pictures for Instagram." She smirks.
"All I'm going to do it put on a swimsuit and put my hair in a braid. There is no need for the extra effort in my opinion. Also, if someone only likes me in makeup, they don't deserve me." I say as I flip my hair.
"Whatever, you do you. What do you want to eat?" she asks.
"I could really go for some cinnamon twists."
"No way. I am not going to be bloated this whole entire party."
"Then where do you want?" I ask.
"Chick-fil-a," she says.
"Mmm..." I say. "I could eat a nice spicy chicken sandwich."
"Then it's settled, Chick-fil-a." Adeline says as she pulls into the Chick-fil-a parking lot.
After eating, Adeline goes straight back to her house to get ready.
"You're going to hate me for saying this," I say as I begin to pull my swimsuit out of the shopping bag.
"What?" she groans.
"I'm going to need to leave the party at eight."
"What, why?"
"I have to get up early for the competition," I say.
"I swear, the one time I finally get you out of your house to do something fun, you have an excuse to leave early."
I sigh. "Adeline, I'm so sorry. I swear this isn't an excuse, you know how much this means to me. Oliver and I can get scholarships for this. I'm staying later than I wanted because I need to practice, but I wanted to go. I was actually looking forward to this."
"Can you at least stay until 8:30? You can't leave me there alone when the party ends at twelve."
"I'll try. You'll be fine when I leave though. You can hang out with your team and discuss some weird hockey things." I say.
"Yeah, and you can go home and talk to yourself about some weird drum line things."
"That's a good idea," I joke.
"Well, you know I am a genius," Adeline laughs.
We both proceed to get ready. I decided I would straighten my hair so I could match with Adeline. When Adeline walked out of her room dressed, I jokingly gasped.
"Hottie," I say.
"I try my best, boo." She says as she walks down the hall like a runway model, blowing kisses to her imaginary audience.
She is wearing a red bikini that ties in the front. It's kind of basic, but it's adorable. It shows off her curves without making her look slutty, and she radiates confidence that I wish I possessed.
"I put too much effort into this to not get some good pictures." Adeline says as she grabs her purse and keys.
"Are you not going to put clothing on?" I ask.
She walks back into her room and walks back out with a pair of shorts. She slides them on and says, "Happy?" as she opens the door to leave.
It's the first day of May living in the boring state of Pennsylvania. The temperature is unusually warm as it reaches 77 degrees fahrenheit. Some people may argue that it's too cold to go swimming, but I have to disagree, especially since the host's pool is heated. The party starts in ten minutes, leaving us with just enough time to get there. We could tell we were close when we heard the loud music.
"Are you excited?" Adeline asks. Adeline is the type of person that thrives off of parties. Every time she gets the opportunity to go to one she goes and stays all night. What I respect about her is that, even though she parties, she has never done drugs. She has drank alcohol, but she knows her limits. She never has done anything irrational and won't let anything happen to her that she doesn't want.
I nod as she pulls up to the house.
"Ayyye!" Adeline yells as she walks into the party. Though this is a pretty chill and laid back party, she still gets all hyped.
We walk outside to the pool area and it is packed. I cling to Adeline's side praying to find someone I know.
"Looking good," a senior says to Adeline as I as he walks past.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
"Food," is all she says as she continues to walk. The whole school must have been invited. I see seniors, juniors, sophomores, and even a few freshmen.
When we arrive at the snack area I finally see someone I recognize.
"Ashton, hey!" I say walking up to a tenor drum player.
"Hope! I never thought I'd see you anywhere without your drum," he jokes.
"I was dragged here by Adeline," I laugh.
"Seems like something she would do."
"Have you seen Oliver?" I ask.
"Only talk to snare's now?" he smirks.
"Definitely, can't be seen going around with tenor players."
He laughs as he says, "Haven't seen him, why?"
"I need to talk to him about tomorrow. Are you going?"
"Yeah," he says knowing what I am talking about. "If I see him I'll let you know."
"Thanks. Enjoy the party," I say as I turn to grab something to drink.
"If you need me, I'm only here for the food, so I'll probably be around this general area."
"Good to know," I say as I turn to Adeline.
"See, parties aren't terrible. You just have to find people you know," she says.
"I guess," I reply. "Do you want to go swimming?"
"Sure, let's just find a place to put our stuff," she replies as she scans our surroundings. I match her gaze and see her staring at a lonely lawn chair.
"Perfect," she says as she walks toward it.
We put our stuff down, get stripped down to our bathing suits, and jump in.
"Wait!" Adeline calls as I begin to walk toward the pool.
"Pictures!" she says happily holding her phone out.
I roll my eyes and take the phone from her. After what felt like forever, Adeline was content with taking cute photos and finally let us get into the pool. I was starting to enjoy myself when I heard someone call my name.
"Hope!"
I turn to see the one and only, Flynn Williams.
