Everleigh Adams has spent all of her high school career up until her junior year studying as hard and as diligently as she could to make sure she could ensure a future for herself and make her parents proud.

But when she finds herself as a temporary resident at Lacoste house, it turns out her senior year might not all be what she expected.

Especially with Jacob Lacoste back from deployment for the next six months, her stay was going to be one hell of a ride.

"Last one up to the tree house is a rotten egg!" Jay called out.

Ever ran—hopeful that for once, she would beat him.

"That's not fair!" She cried out, "You cheated! You got a head start!"

"Okay okay, I'll buy you an ice cream the next time the truck comes okay?" He huffed, shutting up Ever's whining.

Unlike most girls her age, Ever rarely cried.

She only whined a lot at the innocent age of 5.

That's why Jay played with her— she wasn't like the girls at his new elementary school.

Ever acted like a boy with pigtails.

"You have to pay it from your piggy bank!" Ever cheesed, nudging Jay.

"Okay, okay! Just don't tell our moms." He hushed her.

"You act like I always tattle on you Jay!" She walked around the big treehouse, pushing the window curtains open with her tiny palms, "It was one time!"

"You tell your momma you're going to be sleeping here tonight?" Jay asked as he climbed onto the top bunk with his dark blue bedding.

"Yea." Ever hollered back, hopping into her lower bunk with white and pink sheets, "She said you better watch me well."

"I will, I know." He mumbles back, his eyes beginning to get droopy.

"Hey Jay?"

"Yes Ever?"

"You pinky promise to be my best friend forever."

The treehouse was quiet before she heard shuffling on the upper bunk. A hand stuck down with its pink out.

Ever took it and pinky-promised.

"I pinky promise you Ever. We'll always be best friends." Jay sighed letting go, Ever chuckled.

"Now let me sleep."
