"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory."
-Dr. SeussChapter Four
I stirred awake as the sun seeped through the blinds.
"Morning." Jacob's familiar voice called out, walking out of the bathroom.
My eyes opened as I looked at his shirtless figure as he brushed his hands through his hair, fixing his bed head.
"There's an extra toothbrush under the sink, feel free to take it." He commented before heading downstairs, "Oh and we can leave after breakfast."
"Alright." I answered before standing up and heading to the bathroom.
I quickly brushed my teeth and reminded myself to buy all my skincare products and some more makeup.
"Good morning!" Mrs. Lacoste called out as she looked around for her keys, "Me and your father will be out all day Jacob—and your parents are going to be talking to contractors today Everleigh."
I nodded and gave her a hug as she reassured me that I knew where everything was and that I could help myself to whatever.
By the time she left, I was already pouring myself a glass of orange juice.
"Is that all your eating?" Jacob asked referring to my glass.
"Yea, I don't have much of an appetite." I shrugged before putting the carton back into the fridge.
"Wow, Everleigh without an appetite?" He gasped jokingly, "Things really have changed."
I laughed before slapping him and making my way to the back door that led to the patio.
"Where are you going?" He asked, dropping his plate in the sink and following me.
"Treehouse." I replied, "I left some clothes in there, wanna come?"
"Alright."
We made our way out and I unlocked the latch that led to the extension of the yard at the back of both our houses.
With a couple more steps, I found myself at the base at the stairs.
He motioned for me to go first before I turned to him, "Last one up is a rotten egg."
I thought I caught him off guard but was proven wrong as he passed me and smirked, "You're never gonna win."
"You're a dick you know." I huffed, pushing the door open.
"Wow, it hasn't changed much." He smiled, taking in the newly added fairy lights and a dresser I added in.
"Nope, it's a great escape from growing up." I sighed, "This was my—our childhood."
He nodded as he climbed up onto his bed before throwing himself down.
I did the same and we stared at the ceiling with both glow-in-the-dark starts and spaceships.
"It's been so long." Jacob breathed.
I could hear him muttering to himself.
"Welcome back Jacob."

With the minimal options I had inside the treehouse, I opted for a pair of blue ripped jeans and and a white top.
"Let's go." I said as I slipped on my Air Force 1s.
"Aight." Jacob replied looking at me before turning away.
Weird.
"My car or yours?" I asked, quickly pulling my hair up into a messy bun.
"Mines, I already have the keys." He answered as I made my way out as well.
The weather was nice and the sky was clear, no clouds and nothing but sun.
"You look good today." Jacob complimented, getting into his side of the car.
He was dressed in a pair of jeans and a plain white tee.
"Thanks."
The car ride was quiet, the two of us making small talk as we made our way to the mall.
"We haven't talked in forever." He said, his fingers drumming on the steering wheel.
"Yea." I sighed, "It's been a while."
"This conversation is so boring to have but well we kinda became strangers over the years." He chuckled.
I shrugged before continuing, "So, how are you and umm—Tiffany?" Referring to his girlfriend before he had left for deployment.
"I had broke it off with her." He answered, "I didn't want to do long-distance. It seemed like a lot of work for a relationship that wasn't working out in the first place."
"Oh." I turned my sight back to the road, "You know she's still telling everyone you're dating her from what I know right?"
Jacob sighed, "No, I didn't know but I do know she took it very...bad."
"Well, you can't please everyone." I huffed, adjusting the knot on my shirt.
"Well, what happened between you and the basketball player?" He asked, pulling off the highway and into the parking lot.
"It just didn't work out." I replied curtly.
"Really? From what I remembered, you guys were perfect for each other." Jacob added, swerving into a parking lot.
I shook my head and shrugged again, letting the silence between us stand.
It was awkward but comfortable.
I guess that's what happens when two people don't talk much in years.
Ian was in Jacob's grade and the two of them knew each other pretty well, having a couple classes together.
I let him turn off the engine before the two of us walked towards the Macy's entrance.
"What stores do you want to go to?" He asked, locking the car.
"Nordstrom, Tillys, Victoria Secret, and maybe a couple others." I listed, remembering that I had to replace my whole closet.
"Then let's do that and then grab a bite to eat."
"Sounds like a plan."
