"They can eat human food normally. Prominent scientist Daniel McCormack's and professor Jihyun Kim's famous work stated in their research that most of them age much slower than the normal human."
The young woman flips a page in the textbook, her pair of dark brown orbs constantly trace the line of words on the white page.
"Despite the cravings for blood, they are not known as vampires. They are not afraid of the sun and the world has yet to find what they are weak against. Their characteristics are most common to a popular manga that came out a century ago. People called them a variety of names... monsters, vampires. But most commonly... ghouls."
"Airi!!!" A loud voice echoes through the quiet library, catching the young woman's attention from her book.
She looks up to find a bright smile beaming at her. Her close friend, Hyori.
"What are you doing here!?" Hyori's gaze trails from the face of her friend to the book on the table. "Ahh, again? Why are you so interested in them?"
Hyori is a beautiful young woman with short hair down to her shoulder. She has big round eyes, a slender nose and face. She stood 5'5 tall and a slim body. Hyori is the epitome of the beauty standard of Korea.
"It's interesting don't you think? Just like all those hybrids, werewolves. What if they are still around?" Airi smiles, putting her hand up in a bunny signs.
"Well if they are real, they are going to go extinct soon." Hyori sighs, she had given up with her friend's strange interest. "The CCG is getting more and more powerful each year."
CCG stands for Commission of Counter Ghouls. An international organization formed in 2062, with the purpose of controlling and dealing with ghoul. Each country, under international laws and its own domestic laws, has its own CCG headquarters. Like police officers, the people that carry out the duties under CCG are called investigators.
Hyori's eyes sparkle up and her hands clasp together under her chin.
"Who is it this time?" Airi asks. She knows her friend too well. Hyori has probably has her eyes on a new handsome man.
"A lot. I can't even remember all the names. CCG's new recruits this year are really something else." Hyori chuckles excitedly. "Say say, let's go to the CCG headquarters in Seoul next time?"
"You know, we have a department like that at our school." Airi chuckles.
Ever since the pandemic in 2060, countless measures were created to keep the affected ones under control. Those who were affected by the virus with no self-controls on their actions were imprisoned and deemed as top criminals, with higher security layers than human criminals.
Government, police departments of each nation all have their own law programs. Even Universities started to establish courses for students to take and trained them to become a ghoul investigator. The courses are more strict and harsh compared to the normal law enforcers. And after years of studying and training to become a ghoul investigator, it is one's dream to work at CCG. Each year, the CCG branch of South Korea only accepts very few people, the elites of the elites.
"I guess... that works for now. But they can't compare to the ones currently working at CCG!" Hyori disappointingly said but she still keeps her hope up. "Anyway, let's go or we will be late to the student welcoming!"
Hyori stands up and closes Airi's book. She places it inside Airi's backpack as she pulls her friend's arm and drags her along.
"Alright alright Hyori!" Airi chuckles. She has totally forgotten the time. She was too immersed in the book.
The young woman starts running with her friend to the ground right in front of the University campus. Stalls after stalls are set up in rows, welcoming the new students this year.
As Airi exits the library, she remembers the last few words that she didn't get the chance to read out loud to herself, but her mind had remembered it.
'They are called ghouls.'
She looks up to the clear blue sky of Seoul, blocking the sunlight with her hand hovering above her head. It is a beautiful day, just perfect for the welcoming day at the University. It is a peaceful and tranquil era, 100 years after the outbreak.
The year of 2160.
