I can see orange getting darker as minutes pass. I love staring in it, the sky always amaze me whether it's day or night. At day, whenever I have a chance, I always observe the clouds from the rooftop of this building. At night, when the sky is clear, the stars that light up the dark surroundings always make me smile and stare at it. Whenever I feel suffocated in my life, staring at it is a breather for me. And every time I stare at it, I feel drowned by the sky. It's like seeing the whole world.
"Beautiful" I muttered. I saw how the heavy clouds reflect the color of the sunset.
I turn my back and the cold wind embraces me, making my hair messier as it is. I close my eyes and let the cold breeze embrace me. It's been five days. Five days of-
"Excuse me Ms.? Doc. Travis is looking for you." I suddenly open my eyes. I saw how the nurse look flustered of disturbing my momentum. I smiled slightly to make him comfortable and as if saying it's alright. I walk into him and together we walk down the stairs, away from my haven, the rooftop.
It's all white, the walls, the ceilings, the medical equipments, the uniforms of the nurses, doctors, and some of the patients, even their skin is pale white because of their sickness. The stress on the faces of medical officers is very evident as they rush to the emergency room. Someone's life is at the edge, I guess. Well, it is how life works right? We can't control our destiny, if it's our time to say bye it will come whether we like it or not.
A rushing Emergency stretcher caught my eyes. I can hear the cries of the old woman as she run along with the doctor and the nurses. I focus on the patient on the stretcher and as it passes on our front, I caught a glimpse of his eyes, he stared at me with darting eyes as if he is looking at my soul. I felt Goosebumps, I can't lift my foot from where I am. Base on his physical appearance, it is like he is not hurt, there's no blood scattered on his shirt or face. He doesn't look familiar though. I don't know someone with that brown, deep-set eyes and an edgy face with fair complexion. Does he know me?
"Are you alright Ms.?" The nurse asked as he pokes on my shoulders making me back to my senses.
"Uhm Ye-Yeah, I mean Yes everything is fine. Come on let's find Travis quickly." I answered giving him a crooked smile.
He seems satisfied with my answer and we continued our way to Travis' office. I can see the front of his office now, the nurse has already left. I push the door slightly and peak inside but I found no one. Slowly I walk inside his office. His office was painted white with a floor to ceiling glass window giving a view of the main road. On a grey desk sat a desktop computer, a stack of paper with a pen on top of it, a cup of coffee unattended and a framed photograph of me. I walk into the swivel chair in front of his desk and sat on it. The bookshelf on the corner catches my attention. It's funny that his bookshelf is dominated by novels that I love rather than medical books that he need for his profession. I turn the swivel chair to the direction of the glass window, I stared at the busy road and I watch the city lights slowly lighting up as darkness illuminate the city. I feel the blackness come over me, making my eyes feel heavier and heavier. I finally close my eyes sending me into a dreamless sleep.
As I rouse from a heavy slumber I am first aware of the coolness brought by the air conditioner and the deep night. I had slept in the swivel chair that my neck hurts so bad, I forgot he has a bedroom here, I should've slept there instead. I search for my phone to see what time is it already. I touch my pocket but my phone is nowhere to be found. I panic and remembered maybe I left it on the rooftop. Standing up I search for a wall clock until I reach his bedroom. I was welcome with a manly scent and of course a plain looking room. Travis, he is such a man. Thank fully he has a wall clock here and it says 9:00 pm! I have slept for 4 hours and he is not here yet! "Where the hell is that man!" I said to myself. I thought he was looking for me but instead he made me wait for him this long, I should have done my things if I had not fallen to sleep waiting for him.
He knows that I hate late comers. Ugh! Seriously that man is getting scold. I walk out of his office and go to the rooftop. The fact that it is already night excites me, I'm sure the view and the night breeze there is superb so I excitedly run upstairs not minding the nurses looking at me like I'm crazy.
I reach the rooftop panting but all the tiredness vanishes as the night breeze envelops me and the mesmerizing city lights welcomes me. I'm already nineteen but the sky will never fail to amaze me. Looking up, I saw the clear night sky with the little stars lined up into constellations.
I lift my right hand reaching the stars. Fooling myself that I can although I know it is impossible. "Oh my!" I screamed nervously. Someone held my hand making me jump from nervousness. My heart is rapidly beating, thinking it is a ghost.
