Day 1,
I aggressively shoved my last remaining pair of jeans into my pack, forgetting to fold them first. Once I got them in I noticed I forgot an extra shirt. I ignored it at first, and just zipped up my backpack. I must've done it too fast, because the zipper had gotten stuck on the tab half way through. A groan of annoyance made its way out of my mouth, knowing we were in a hurry to leave.
"Matthew! This is the third warning, get downstairs now, you'll be late!" My mom, Colleen, called to me.
"G-got it Mom!" I bursted back, tugging violently at my zipper. I ended up lifting my foot onto my bag to keep it into place while I tug on it, but nothing seemed to work.
"Dorkus, your pulling the wrong way." My sister giggled from my doorway. I widened my eyes, and looked down to where i was pulling. I seemed to be trying to open the bag rather than close it, which wasn't what I was supposed to be doing. Another groan came out, and I pushed my glasses away from my eyes, rubbing my nose in aggravation.
"Gimme a hand, smart one?" I asked sarcastically, but genuinely needing help. My sister, Katie, shook her head with a small giggle, and walked over to my .bag with her arms crossed over her purple dress. She sat there next to my bag for a few seconds, fiddling with the zipper. It seemed to easily come undone.
"There y'are!" She said, please with herself. My sister never ceases to amaze me. Even when it comes to just zipping a backpack. A short moment of silence went by, when I noticed Katie looking back and forth from my backpack to my bedroom door, and all the dirty laundry in between. I'm getting paranoid now. She quickly jolted her body, and yanked my bag off my bed, then sprinted towards the door, swiftly dodging all the things on my floor. I began to run after her, my feet hesitating for a moment.
"Keep up, slow poke!" Katie taunted, jogging down the stairs with my pack in her left hand and her right on the stairwell. I slipped on a shirt lying on my floor, sending me flying forward like an ice skater. I glided outside my door, and hit the stairwell. Still stunned, I was determined to get my bag back. I was already late too. I sprinted down the steps, keeping up with Katie by skipping a few steps. She was too small, so she had to go step by step due to our big staircase. Making to the end of the steps, I let my hand out to reach for the end pillar. Once I made it, I grabbed the pillar and spun to turn around and continue the chase. Katie made her way to the kitchen, which I knew there was no where else to go once she was in there so I slowed down, and kept in to find her. She's......gone? I'm so confused. I know she's small but there's not vey many places to hide in the kitchen, except one! I walked to the bottom of the sink on the other side of the room, and crouched down to the cabinet underneath the fosit. I opened it and reached my hand in, tickling her stomach.
"Ree-ree-ree!" I teased, making a bad movie reference. She didn't laugh. "Katie?" She didn't answer, so I called by her preferred name. "Pidge..." I said, opening the other side of the cupboard to see the top half of her body. She was holding my bag like a stuffed toy, her faced buried in it.
"I don't want you to go..." She cried, her voice muffled from my pack.
"Oh Katie." I said, pulling her out of the cabinet. I gave her a hug, and looked at her face. She was all red and sniffly, tars running down her round cheeks. I really don't want her to feel so bad that I'm leaving. It'll be a few months, maybe a little less than a year until I get back. Kerberos is a long ways, and she knows this.
"Look," I said wiping her face " If I can, I'll sneak you a little ice sample from Kerberos, maybe even an autograph from Takashi!" I announced, in attempt to cheer her up. A nervous smile spread across her face, and she hugged me tighter.
"But still, that's not what I really want." She said, muffled into my garrison uniform.
"What do you want?" I said, kind of joking.
"To go with you and dad. Or for you guys to stay." She said seriously.
"You know we can't do that Pidge. You haven't reached the right level yet! Besides, when you do, we can go on a bunch of missions together." I said with smiling. "C'mon, let's go." I said quietly, lifting Pidge and I off the ground. We walked into the front foyer of the house, where Mom and Dad were waiting for us.
"Goodness gracious! You'll miss your mission for Christ sake, you have to go!" My mom said, welling tears in her eyes.
"You really want me gone that bad?" I joked, and gave her a hug goodbye.
"No, Matt, no. I'm so, so, proud of you. Come home soon, kiddo." She trembled, holding back tears. I looked over and Katie and dad were saying their goodbyes as well. My mom wiped her tears and sniffled, "Ok, ok. Say goodbye to your sister." She weakly spoke with a small smile. She went to my dad, and they gave a very worried ad passionate hug for goodbye. She started to ball, I couldn't bare to see my mom like that so I turned around to face my sister who was crying to. Next to her legs was our house dog, Bae-Bae. I gently grabbed. My sister shoulders and pullled her to my chest, giving her a meaningful hug. I felt my eyes well up with water. A lump in my throat. My knees were shaky. What if something really will happen when we go to Kerberos? Is that why everyone is worried? I honestly hope not. I just want to get there, get the ice samples, and come back as soon as possible. To see mom, Katie, and even Bae-Bae. The tear finally ran down my cheek. "Alright Miss Pidge!" I said, breaking the hug and looking her in the eyes "I must bid you ado. This is where we must part, old friend." I mumbled, giving her my glasses. She smiled and put them on.
I gathered my things back up, patted Bae-Bae on the head, and made my way out the door with Dad. Before closing the door, I gave one look back to my mom and sister. Another tear ran down my cheek, and I waved my final farewells.Maybe my final farewels...
