Keith had just moved in. It was nicer than most foster homes, and the owners were very kind. Unfortunately, he had to switch schools.

The first day wasn't very hard, and he actually made friends with some guys, Lance and Hunk. They were pretty cool, in his opinion.

He soon learned that another girl lived on his road. She almost always wore an over sized black sweater, shoulder length auburn hair, and ripped black jeans. They didn't look like they came ripped from a store, however, and it just looked like she couldn't afford new ones. The same went for her big black combat boots.

Keith could almost hear the music coming from her earbuds as he walked past her. He couldn't help but watch as she opened a small gate to a run down house. Keith couldn't help but watch over his shoulder as she walked up a large set of stairs to a porch, wincing every time it squeaked. She opened the front door and held her breath as the hinges made a loud noise.

Yelling came from inside the house, an angry man's voice, and the girl let out a defeated sigh, before yelling back, and slamming the door.

The next day, Keith found her standing at his bus stop. She didn't say anything, and Keith didn't try to start up any conversations. The bus was quiet, and Keith appreciated no longer having to put up with squealing and screaming kids.

He learned that she was in his A block science class, and his C block P.E. class.

"You don't want to deal with her," Lance, leaned over to whisper to Keith. They were both in science with Hunk, and the three of them shared a table. "I hear she punched a kid last ye-"

"Mr. McClain. Are you paying attention? Or is your side conversation that important that you stopped listening? Do you have any clue what we are doing?" The teacher had caught the attention of their table, and she was pointing to the board.

"You're pairing us up for the project," said Lance. He smiled at the teacher.

"And what is the project on?" The teacher crossed her arms and glared at Lance, fighting back a smile at his antics. He was an idiot, but he was a lovable goofball as well, and almost no one could keep a straight face while he was acting this way.

Lance squinted at the board, and proudly read off, "Something about space. We can do anything, so long as it's about space."

The teacher nodded her head acceptingly.

"You'll be pairing up-" the class broke out into a chatter, everyone discussing who they wanted to pair with. "-but I'll be selecting the pairs." The whole class sighed, and the teacher continued. She wrote out pairs on the board and read them out as she finished it.

"Lance and Plaxum. Hunk and Shay. Shiro and Adam. Keith and Katie. Allura and Romelle..." Keith looked around the room.

"You got stuck with Pidge," Lance whispered sympathetically. He pointed to the girl that Keith shared a road with. She had her boot on her desk. Keith nearly glossed it over as her being a rebel, putting her feet up, but he soon realized that she was wrapping duct tape around the heel of it. Her boot was falling apart, and the sole of it was barely attached anymore.

"She lives on my road. We catch the bus together," Keith said. Katie stood from her seat, stuffing the duct tape in her backpack and wobbling back and forth on her duct taped boot. Then she marched over to Keith's table, crossing her arms uncomfortably.

"You're Keith?" she asked meekly. Keith nodded and gestured for her to sit down in the open seat across from him. Lance and Hunk had left to sit with their partners. Katie -Pidge?- shifted in her seat and opened her mouth to say something, only to close it again. Keith rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and tried to start a conversation.

"We live on the same road, right?" he asked.

"I think so," she mumbled. "Greens road?"

Keith nodded. "I just moved in with the Shiroganes'. I'm a foster kid. I'm really hoping I don't have to leave anytime soon." Pidge seemed to be uncomfortable, so Keith tried to continue talking as much as he could.

Eventually the class ended, and Keith and Pidge made plans top work on their project later that night. Pidge had a really good idea.

The rest of the day flew by, and Pidge and Keith ended up sitting together on the bus.

"So are we working on it at your house, or..." she trailed off.

"Actually, my foster mother is sick, and my foster dad is away on a trip. Which means, Shiro is busy taking care of Cynthia, and everything is all thrown off and you don't want to get sick either," Keith rambled. Pidge nodded slowly, seeming lost in thought.

"Okay, well then, maybe... we could go to the park, and work there?" she suggested.

"What about your place?" Keith asked. The bus started moving forwards, and Pidge put in one of her headphones.

"Um, my parents... they, don't like when I have people over... they... okay. Yeah sure. We can go to the basement and I can tell my parents to suck it up. Sure. We can walk to my house." Pidge rambled a bit, and Keith found it cute. This girl didn't match up to any of the rumors floating around about her. She was kind, and smart, not mean and insulting. She ended her spiel, and smiled at him. She had to look up a bit, being as short as she was.

They sat in comfortable silence for the rest of the bus ride, and Pidge led Keith through the front gate to her house. She led him up the stairs, tiptoeing quietly, once again cringing at each squeak.

"Are you okay?" Keith asked.

"Shh!" Pidge hissed. She motioned for him to follow, and he did so silently this time. Pidge pressed her ear to the door and listened. When she was satisfied that there were no sounds coming from inside of the house, she pulled a single key from her back pocket.

"Breath through your mouth, stay close to the furniture and away from the walls, take off your shoes out here," she instructed, almost silently, pulling off her own shoes. "Climb on the furniture if you can, don't touch rolling chairs, and try to get to the stairs as quickly as possible. Stay away from the lights and- oh, are your socks really slippery? Never mind, just don't slip and fall. Please." She calculated something in her head. "If you need to get out quickly... you know what. Never mind, I've got it. Move quickly and quietly. I think I said that already. I'm sorry."

She stuck the key in the hole, and slowly opened the door. She poked her head around the corner, and motioned for him to follow once again, as she stepped onto the tile floor. He followed, quite nervous, not knowing what to expect. Pidge waved her hand to he stairs on the other side of the kitchen. She held up two fingers, and pointed to the left.

First floor on the left. Got it.

Keith sprinted to the other side, and Pidge followed through quietly. Keith made it to the room and silently shut the door. He expected Pidge to follow him through at any moment, and got absolutely terrified when he heard yelling coming from upstairs.
