"Veronica!"
I spun around to see none other than my bestfriend Betty Cooper standing in front of me, her usual perky smile spreading across her face. I saw she wasn't with Jughead, which was surprising.
Betty and Jughead had been dating for almost a year now, and were inseparable to say the least, both of them were infatuated with each other and didn't mind showing it to the rest of the world. It was sweet but it got old fast, and I was glad to be able to talk to my bestfriend in private for once.
"What's up, B?" I ask, slamming my locker closed and slinging my backpack over my shoulder.
"The gang and I were thinking of going to Pop's. You free?"
"Who's going?"
"Cheryl, Josie, Toni, Kevin, Fangs, and me! Obviously," Betty replies, and I nod my head slowly.
"Alright, I'm in!" I reply finally, stepping outside into the cool winter air. Soon Betty and I were joined by the rest of the group, and we all began walking to Pop's.
Riverdale High was fairly close to everyone's favourite diner, and we often went there after school. The group naturally split off into smaller groups as we walked, talking and laughing about their days.
I found myself walking at the front of the group next to Cheryl Blossom, someone I considered to be one of my bestfriends, even though we did argue very often.
"So Veronica, what's new? How's Archie?" she asked curtly. Cheryl liked to think she knew everything that was going on all the time, which was partially true, she did know everyone's business. But Archie was one thing she didn't know anything about.
"Awful, as usual. Why?" I replied, slightly on edge after hearing the tone in her voice.
"Didn't seem so awful when you were talking to him today," Cheryl commented casually.
I rolled my eyes.
"Cheryl, don't start with me on Archie, okay? It's not your business."
Now it was Cheryl's turn to roll her eyes, and she gave a condescending laugh to accompany it.
"Of course it's my business. You know I like him, and he obviously likes me. Stop forcing yourself on him, Veronica. He doesn't want to sleep with you, and never will," Cheryl spat, no longer attempting to hide her true emotions.
I was taken aback at the sudden harsh tone, but tried not to show it. After waiting a beat for my response that never came, Cheryl stormed off into the woods.
Everyone's eyes followed her but no one's feet did. Cheryl often got in these moods that no one could get her out of, and no one was willing to pass up a trip to Pop's just to get screamed at by the redhead.
I sighed, both in relief and exhaustion. Cheryl always did think she knew exactly what was going on, but when it came to Archie she was just about the most oblivious of them all.
She reminded me of how I used to feel towards Archie.
Possessive, passionate, in love.
Look where that got me.
