Chapter 9: To Rob a Morgue

“You want to what?” I sputtered, not fully comprehending what just came out of Atticai’s mouth.

“God, are we going to have to repeat everything?” Levi complained, “We’re breaking into the morgue to save your dead best friend. Get it now?”

I glowered at him in reply, my annoyance being kicked up a few notches. “You’re friggin Vampires and you need my help to get into a morgue? Where is the sense in that?” I truly couldn’t see why they needed my help with this, I mean surely they were like experts at this stuff?

Jarrod shook his head at Levi when he opened his mouth to retort before explaining to me, “The situation is a bit more…complicated than usual." he sighed heavily, "There are people who want Keegan dead as well as you and right now they believe they’ve succeeded in getting rid of at least one of you.  If it’s broadcasted that someone broke in and stole his body they’ll know he’s alive. It needs to look like nothing is amiss and that means we can’t just go in guns blazing, demanding his body. That’s where you come in.” he gave me a pointed look, waiting for the few seconds it took me to realise why.

“My mom’s a corner.” I groaned, tipping my head back.

Levi started clapping, “And she finally gets it!” he cheered, a mocking grin in place.

I cocked an eyebrow at him, “Right, I’ve had about as much as I can take with you.” I snapped, “Vampire or not I know I can kick your ass so don’t even go there.”

Levi chuckled, daring me to try it, “Bring it, HuMo.”

“Levi.” Jarrod warned, “Stop acting like a two year old.”

The two started arguing softly so it was Atticai that continued. “We came to you because your mother is the one in charge and because you’re Keegan’s best friend. You can get her keys can’t you? I’ve already altered the records so that it looks like Keegan’s autopsy has been performed and he’s been cremated. It means fewer questions.”

I could so see Atticai in his element with computers and it made me smile, “Problem, though. My mom isn’t one to keep quiet if something isn’t right. She hasn’t performed the autopsy –”

“Not for lack of trying, that’s for damn sure.” Levi commented before retreating back into his conversation with Jarrod.

Atticai waved it off, “We’ve had a hard time keeping her busy to make sure that doesn’t happen. Keegan’s weak already. He wouldn’t survive the examination, not with a wound as severe as the one he has.” I must have turned green at that because he quickly changed subjects, “Anyway, what were you saying?”

I shook off the mental images to answer, “Just because the records say she’s done it doesn’t mean she’s not going to go straight to Chief Jamison and inform him that someone has tampered. Don’t you have some kind of mind controlling voodoo?”

Atticai fiddled with his glasses nervously which was all the answer I needed.

“If you can just make her think she’s done it, why don’t you just walk right in and take him?” I enquired, a little unnerved by the fact that they could actually mess with my mind.

“We’ve tried. Repeatedly. We can’t seem to…persuade her. It’s why we need you, she’s weary of us now, we’ve been poking around too much and if Keegan’s body suddenly goes poof then she’s going to point fingers directly at us.” He didn’t look the least bit happy about their unlucky attempts which only served to unsettle me more.

“I still don’t get how we’re going to pull this off. I’ve never broken into my mom’s work before.”

“Well, we won’t really be breaking in since you’re going to get the keys for us.” Levi piped up again, ignoring Jarrod’s aggravation. “You get the keys, Cai disables the security system, we get Keegan out and then make your mom’s geeky assistant think he did the autopsy and burned Keeg to a cinder.” He grinned, obviously pleased with the idea.
